General Description:

This position is responsible for performing a variety of instructional support activities in the Math Lab including tutoring students, aiding with homework software issues; assisting with mathematical related technology; administering programs handles by the OCCC Math Lab; assisting with a calculator leasing program; proctoring exams; maintaining logs; moving tables and chairs for various activities; and performing basic clerical duties such as answering phones.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Associates degree or equivalent (60 successful college credit hours) including:


At least 15 credit hours of college-level mathematics (with a grade of C or better)


OR


12 credit hours of Calculus (with a grade of C or better)


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


Knowledge:
Familiar with mathematical software such as Maple or Geometer's Sketchpad;


Familiar with tutorial programs such as MyMathLab, ConnectMath, or WebAssign; and


Tutoring in math concepts including tutoring manipulatives.



Skills:
Using TI-84 and TI-89 graphing calculators;


Using a tablet;


Using computers and Microsoft Office;


Organizing work;


Communicating and articulating mathematical concepts in an organized manner; and


Filing alphabetically.



Abilities:
Be punctual and reliable;


Learn information taught in math/statistical courses at OCCC;


Learn new programs and equipment used in the lab and/or math classes;


Pay attention to details;


Maintain confidentiality regarding passwords and student information;


Maintain a clean and orderly work environment;


Interact in an effective and encouraging manner with students individually and in groups;


Read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting mathematical concepts; and


Follow directions and guidelines.


Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is light work which requires the person in this position to occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

Work is performed using a flexible schedule ranging from ½ hour before opening and ½ hour after closing hours; schedule is determined each semester to meet needs of the Math Lab.

Work Hours:

Schedule to be determined each semester to meet the needs of the Math Lab. Work times will be during the hours the campus is open including evenings and Saturdays.

Job Duties (Position Specific):

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):

Tutors students in the Math Lab (both in-person and via email/Zoom); helps students with math assignments by asking questions, looking at student work, assessing the student's level of understanding, encouraging them to think through problems, using their resources, and talking/walking through problems; and circulates throughout the lab regularly to assist students at tables and computers.


Provides virtual tutoring to online or distance students; instructs and assists students in the use of mathematical related technology such as the graphing calculators (TI-84, TI-89), mathematical software, and computerized tutorial programs through demonstration.


Assists with administering and maintaining a calculator lease program.


Provides services to students and faculty in the Math Lab; answers phone to provide information and mathematics tutoring; reviews subject material in order to be of better assistance; administers the temporary loan of texts and calculators within the Math Lab; monitors central counter to keep assets and materials secure; maintains system of filing of instructional software, textbooks, and solution manuals; maintains reservation notebook for reserving Math Lab computer areas and laptop carts; maintains records of students using the Math Lab and lab resources; and maintains documents, schedules, handouts, and printing for staff and student needs.


Assists with proctoring tests; keeps a record of students proctored.Assists with scheduling of staff and activities in the Math Lab; mentors and trains new tutors and assistants.


Collects and reports Math Lab usage data; takes inventory of items in the lab and classrooms; cleans lab, calculators, and other areas; and moves tables, chairs, and miscellaneous furniture to set up classes/labs.


Opens and closes the Math Lab by following established procedures as assigned; helps enforce all Math Lab policies.


Participates in training concerning mathematics courses and/or tutoring by attending designated training sessions and completing requested activities; participates in College initiatives and staff development programs and training.
