Earlham College is seeking a French Language Assistant and Francophone Studies to join our team.
Job Summary:
The French language assistant will help instructors in French and Francophone Studies in their courses and with language-related activities, lead conversation groups, offer individual tutoring sessions to students who are struggling, and/or grade the daily work for students in beginning courses. The French language assistant will also promote the use of French in that setting, especially during meals in the college cafeteria and initiate/organize activities that are open to all members of the campus, such as films, desserts or dinners, gatherings for speakers of French, etc. The assistant will likewise work with professors in French and Francophone Studies to organize and host all cultural activities in which France and other francophone countries are represented, e.g., as part of the International Festival. In sum, the French assistant will ensure the presence and visibility of French among students while maintaining necessary daily contact with professors in French and Francophone Studies.
As remuneration, the French language assistant will be receiving a 14-meal plan through Metz (the student dining hall and cafeteria) for the duration of the school year. The French assistant will also be paid a total of $18,000 for an average of 20 hours of work per week for the Department of French and Francophone Studies and for work done outside courses. . Housing, travel to and from Earlham College, and personal expenses are not included. The Assistant must have health insurance, and if needed, the assistant can enroll in limited benefit options upon arriving on campus. Student exchange visas are not financially supported by the department so successful candidate will be responsible for obtaining a student visa.
Preference is given to candidates who have already earned their high school degree, have begun university studies, and are interested in the French language and in teaching it to others.
