Position Overview and Job Duties

Under the supervision and general direction of the CISO & IT Director Info Security, the AI Specialist will play a pivotal role in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance teaching, learning, and administrative processes for the University. This position will involve researching, developing, and implementing AI-driven solutions to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and student outcomes. Works closely with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, design, test, and deploy AI projects that drive innovation. Helps with solutions to problems that may arise in an expeditious, efficient, and timely manner. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of the University of Central Oklahoma.


Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and maintenance of artificial intelligence solutions. Involved in various stages of AI project development, from data collection and preprocessing to model training and evaluation. Ensures the seamless integration of AI systems with existing infrastructure. Communicates and fosters professional relationships with clients, committees, and departments. Coordinates with other OIT departments for integration and connectivity.



  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of AI models and algorithms.

  • Collects, preprocesses, and analyzes large datasets.

  • Trains and evaluates machine learning models. Participates in code reviews and provides constructive feedback. Troubleshoots and resolves issues related to AI models and applications.

  • Stays up to date with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning. Contributes to research and development efforts in AI technologies.

  • Designs and conducts experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of AI solutions and optimize for desired outcomes.

  • Ensures compliance with data privacy and security regulations.

  • Creates and maintains documentation including AI models, algorithms, and operational and support procedures. Publishes client-facing support documents to improve user experience.

  • Researches and communicates new features of assigned application(s) and unused tool functionality to drive the platform expansion and adoption, which may include developing road maps, guides, standards, and procedures.

  • Continually updates skills and knowledge relative to the position and the technology industry.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Experience Required

Bachelor's degree plus 1 year experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or other relevant field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or R.


Qualifications / Experience Preferred

  • Familiarity with functional design principles, object-oriented programming principles, basic algorithms.

  • Knowledge of data mining, statistical analysis, and natural language processing techniques.

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.

  • Experience with project management methodologies such as Agile or Scrum.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting preferred.


Knowledge / Skills / AbilitiesMust possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, disseminate, and present significant amounts of information with an attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to Communicate complex AI concepts and findings to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner. Ability to facilitate team interaction and client meetings effectively. Ability to work independently or with specialized group and maintain courteous attitude in dealing with students, faculty, and staff. Manage and prioritize work effectively with minimal supervision. Proficient with Microsoft Office Professional. Continually updates skills and knowledge relative to the position and the technology industry. Adheres to and complies with UCOs shared values and the Office of Information Technology's Code of Ethics. This position may be assigned 24x7x365 on-call rotation responsibilities and requires the successful candidate to have high-speed internet access to their residence and maintain a smart phone on which to receive telephone calls, email, SMS messages from servers and authorized OIT personnel.
