Job Description:

ECS is seeking a ARPA-H Stem-cell Biology & Immunology Technical Advisor to work in our Washington, DC (Hybrid) office.

Job Description:

Are you a passionate, innovative biologist, microbiologist, biotechnologist, biochemist, or biomedical engineer ready to tackle some of the biggest challenges in science?

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is seeking a passionate and highly motivated Stem Cell Biology Technical Advisor to join our team and play a critical role in supporting the Stem Cell-Derived Thymus Rejuvenation (CDTR) project. The CDTR project aims to revolutionize treatment for individuals lacking a functional thymus, a vital organ for developing T lymphocytes (white blood cells) that defend the body against pathogens, cancer, and vaccines. This project leverages the power of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to engineer best-in-class human iPS-derived thymic epithelial cells (iPS-TECs). The project is divided into two phases:

Phase 1: Develop a method to generate best-in-class human iPS-TECs using a combination of chemical and genetic factors. These iPS-TECs must effectively support T lymphocyte development in a laboratory setting (in vitro).

Phase 2: Establish protocols for transplanting and achieving long-term engraftment of iPS-TECs in animal models. This will demonstrate the ability to restore effective immune function, paving the way for potential future application in humans.

In this crucial role, you will serve as the scientific and engineering technical advisor (SETA)-providing support and thought leadership to the delivery team responsible for research, development, and application of cutting-edge thymic cell therapies to restore immune functions.

What you will do:

  • Provide deep expertise in immune system research and thymus biology:
    • Expertise with developing therapies to treat immunodeficiencies, transplant related, and autoimmune diseases.
    • Understanding in developing innovative therapies for patients with a range of immune system disorders.
    • Experience with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and cell manufacturing.
  • Expertise in compact and rapid diagnostic approaches:
    • Experience and understanding of ultra-high-speed screening systems for bacterial analysis.
    • Experience in development of high-throughput screening (HTS) mechanisms and antibacterial drug discovery.
  • Stay current with scientific advancements:
    • Actively track and analyze new research findings within the field.
    • Identify and propose emerging methodologies and technologies that could enhance the program's progress.
    • Participate in scientific discussions and presentations, contributing your expertise to the program's overall knowledge base.
  • Collaborate effectively within a diverse team:
    • Build strong relationships with computational scientists, engineers, and other scientific advisors involved in the program.
    • Communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Actively participate in brainstorming sessions and problem-solving exercises to drive the program forward.

Required Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Stem Cell Biology, Immunology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in stem cell research, with a strong focus on iPSC technology and applications.
  • Demonstrated expertise in thymic development and T cell biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, analyze data, and write scientific reports.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic and a passion for scientific discovery.

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience supporting Federal ARPA agencies is preferred.
