Job Description:


Summary:


The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently hiring for an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.  This is a non-tenured position responsible for assisting the Dean of CCOM with administration of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Rank of Assistant/Associate Dean is dependent upon administrative leadership experience.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Educational Goals:



  • Works with the Dean to establish and achieve the educational goals of MWU/CCOM.



Curriculum:



  • With the Associate Dean of Clinical Education and the Associate Dean for Interprofessional Education, oversees the educational curriculum for OMS I – IV students promoting integration of the basic and clinical sciences across all courses.

  • Promotes innovation in the educational curriculum.

  • Analyzes performance data for trends to prepare necessary changes in curriculum and to prepare for successful performance on COMLEX-USA and on clinical rotations.

  • Manages preparation of OMS I and II block schedules.

  • May provide instruction in the curriculum per interest and departmental needs.

  • Manages the curricular mapping process in One45.



Students:



  • Monitors student progression primarily for OMS I and II classes.

  • Conducts and supervises student academic tracking and academic counseling with an emphasis on the preclinical phase of the curriculum.

  • Counsels students pre and post-attendance at Student Promotions Committee.

  • Monitors and manages students and their schedules while on leaves of absence with an emphasis on students in the preclinical phase of the curriculum.

  • Oversees the Extended Studies Program in the preclinical phase of the curriculum.

  • Advises students on scholarship and fellowship applications.

  • Provides advice and counsel on the COMLEX-USA licensure examination preparation.

  • Counsels students who have failed COMLEX-USA Level 1 and/or Level 2, and may serve as a faculty COMCoach in assisting the student develop a remediation plan.

  • Working with the Registrar, oversees the accuracy of student transcripts.

  • Working with the Assistant to the Dean, ensures the accuracy of the graduation approval process.



Faculty:



  • Serves as a liaison to basic and clinical sciences faculty for any and all concerns related to the delivery of the curriculum.

  • Works with Course Directors to manage student schedules and transcripts for summer remediation courses.

  • Recruits and trains faculty COMCoaches in cooperation with the CCOM Assessment Manager.



Accreditation:



  • Monitors compliance with all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies.

  • Prepares reports for all such agencies and bodies.

  • Maintains records necessary for proper oversight.

  • Attends all COCA meetings in order to maintain a current understanding of the focus and expectations of standards.



Assessment:



  • Oversees examination preparation and analyzes examination performance, as needed.

  • In cooperation with the Associate Dean of Clinical Education, oversees NBOME processes for

  • COMLEX-USA, COMATs and COMSAEs.

  • Develops and periodically reviews the assessment processes for student performance.

  • In cooperation with the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, assists the CCOM Assessment Manager prepare the Academic Assessment Plan annual report for approval by the Dean. 



Research and scholarly activity:



  • Assists in grant writing and promotes research by faculty and students.

  • Administrates the CCOM Michael Walczak DO Research Award process.

  • Administrates the Kenneth A. Suarez CCOM Summer Research Fellowship Program.

  • Conducts educational research and presents findings at national meetings and/or via published manuscripts.

  • Seeks collaboration with like-minded educators at other academic institutions to promote best practices in osteopathic medical education.



General:



  • Monitors and updates the college catalog, academic procedures and manuals.

  • Participates in the development and monitoring of the strategic plan.

  • Participates in Dean’s advisory and planning meetings.

  • Promotes good working relationships with other colleges at MWU.

  • Serves in ex officio capacity on CCOM committees.

  • Attends local, regional and national meetings that are osteopathic and/or educational in focus.

  • Participates in national organizations, seeking to serve actively on committees that promote the specific goals of that organization and provide benefit to the osteopathic medical education community.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Dean. 


Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job directly supervises the Dean’s Office Assessment Manager.

Education And/Or Experience

The Assistant/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is either a doctoral level academician or a graduate of a College of Osteopathic Medicine who has completed a post-graduate residency and is certified in the appropriate specialty by the AOA.  If a physician, this position requires 5 years practice experience. Prior administrative medical education experience for 3 years is also required. The applicant may be tenured or non-tenured faculty.


Communication Skills/Other Abilities

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and/or boards. Must have familiarity and working knowledge of education resource and management systems and Microsoft Office/Adobe programs (such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
