Senior Meteorlogical Technician
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the institution. Applicants are encouraged to include in their cover letter information about how they will further this goal.
The University of Vermont (UVM) Water Resources Institute (WRI), with funding from the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, is beginning to establish a statewide mesonet-a network of meteorological monitoring stations. This initiative aims to address critical gaps in weather observation identified by the National Weather Service and state partners.
Play a central role in this project, starting with engagement of partners and the installation of a high-end prototype station. Leverage UVM's existing meteorological infrastructure and integrate it into this network. Lead the installation, expansion, and maintenance of the mesonet; managing contractors and coordinating the involvement of students and staff in building and maintaining the network; perform sensor calibration, equipment repairs, and site maintenance (e.g., landscaping and pest management); training and supporting new staff as the network grows and additional projects are initiated. This position is ideal for a skilled technician eager to contribute to an impactful statewide weather monitoring initiative that will make the State of Vermont more resilient against flooding and other extreme weather events.
Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Engineering, Meteorology, or a related field. At least three years of experience in outdoor fieldwork, including working in varying and extreme weather conditions. Proven experience with the installation, maintenance, and repair of meteorological instrumentation. Valid driver's license. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and climb meteorological towers. Strong organizational and management skills. Ability to work independently, lead and manage a team, collaborate effectively, and operate with minimal supervision.
