Job Summary

Join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of surgeons and advanced practice providers within the Minimally Invasive and Advanced GI Surgery Team. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with experts across esophageal disease, bariatric surgery, obesity medicine, abdominal wall reconstruction, and robotic surgery. As part of our innovative and high-volume program, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will play an essential role in expanding patient care capacity, assisting with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and managing both inpatient and outpatient care. This hybrid position provides exposure to cutting-edge surgical techniques and fosters professional growth through meaningful collaborations across multiple surgical disciplines. Additionally, this role offers opportunities to engage in research, attend national conferences, participate in weekly academic meetings, and contribute to the training of future clinicians. Our program fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.



Responsibilities



  • Serves as an Advanced Practice Provider delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care within the General Surgery program, working closely with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, obesity medicine specialists, and other providers.


  • Manages a diverse caseload of patients, providing seamless care across esophageal disease, bariatric surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, and advanced robotic surgery programs.


  • Independently performs patient assessments, establishes diagnoses, and implements and evaluates medical care plans under physician supervision.


  • Supports general surgery patients in both outpatient clinics and inpatient settings, ensuring continuity of care pre- and post-operatively.


  • Performs and assists with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as manometry, pH studies, and other specialized services, in both outpatient and ambulatory settings.


  • Collaborates with surgeons and clinical specialists to optimize patient care pathways, leveraging expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.


  • Provides telephone triage to address patient concerns, complaints, and follow-up needs, communicating effectively with the care team.


  • Conducts comprehensive or focused health assessments, analyzing clinical data and coordinating diagnostic studies.


  • Develops tailored care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, emphasizing patient education and anticipatory guidance regarding treatments, lifestyle modifications, and surgical procedures.


  • Rounds on post-surgical patients in inpatient settings, managing care transitions and ensuring positive clinical outcomes.


  • Participates in collaborative initiatives aimed at advancing surgical care, optimizing patient experience, and enhancing clinical outcomes across minimally invasive and advanced GI surgery.


  • Discharges patients appropriately and facilitate post-procedure follow-up visits to monitor outcomes, including disease progression and recovery.


  • Promotes adherence to clinical care protocols aligned with the evolving needs of complex general surgery patients.


  • Participates in academic medicine by contributing to research initiatives, attending national conferences, and presenting clinical findings and innovative techniques.


  • Engages in weekly academic conferences and multidisciplinary meetings to advance clinical knowledge and patient care.


  • Supports the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering the next generation of clinicians.


  • Contributes to a collaborative culture focused on surgical innovation, clinical excellence, and the advancement of minimally invasive and robotic techniques.


  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.


  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.


  • Performs other related work as needed.





Minimum Qualifications




Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.



Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.



Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications




Education:



  • An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).





Experience:



  • Two or more years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.





Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:



  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.


  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.





Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:



  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.


  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.





Preferred Competencies



  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.


  • Knowledge of pharmacy, phlebotomy, injections, and general ENT/otology procedures.


  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication.


  • Ability to read documents or instruments.


  • Ability to perform detailed work.


  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions.


  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive information.
