Field Systems Engineer - CNC Machine Tools & Controls
Position Summary: We are seeking a Field Systems Engineer to support the installation, startup, and troubleshooting of CNC machine tools at customer sites and on the shop floor. This role requires a strong foundation in PLC and electrical systems, along with troubleshooting and control logic experience. You will work in a fast-paced manufacturing and fabricating environment, ensuring the functionality of machinery where electronics meet mechanics. This position offers the opportunity for both domestic and international travel, with regular rotations of two-week trips, typically with weekends at home.
Work Location: Live anywhere ... domestic and international travel (home base is Rockford, IL)
Salary: Based on experience ($26-$40 per/hour plus overtime, per diem, and paid travel)
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the startup and installation of CNC machine tools, including configuring parameters and conducting initial software loads.
Diagnose and resolve issues with electrical systems, including servo-activated systems, AC/DC circuits, and control systems (both closed and open-loop axes).
Work with written control logic, perform logic debugging, and edit programming as necessary.
Act as an inspector to ensure proper functionality where electronics integrate with mechanical components, reviewing wiring schematics and device timings.
Collaborate with the customer and internal teams to ensure smooth commissioning and adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
Qualifications & Experience:
Strong foundation in PLC programming and electrical systems, with hands-on experience in troubleshooting and control logic (ladder logic preferred).
Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, including device timing and wiring diagrams.
Experience with CNC machine parameters, axis drive tuning, and geometry/positioning axis compensation.
Ability to solve complex issues involving electrical systems and machine mechanics.
Experience in automated manufacturing environments, particularly related to CNC or similar machinery.
Familiarity with Siemens systems is a plus, but not required. The company will provide training as needed.
Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and clients.
Ability to prioritize tasks, organize daily activities, and manage multiple responsibilities.
Additional Requirements:
The role involves approximately 75% travel, including domestic and occasional international travel (e.g., Italy, Brazil, Greece, Saudi Arabia). Travel is typically two weeks at a time with weekends at home. Travel is fully compensated (door-to-door), with no out-of-pocket costs for the employee.
Expect to work approximately 55 hours per week, with overtime available for hours exceeding 40 per week.
High school diploma required; a technical degree is preferred, but not required if experience is sufficient.
