Job Description:

The Allen-Stevenson School seeks an experienced fundraising professional who will fully support the school's vision and mission, is an excellent storyteller, and will oversee, evaluate, and provide strategic direction for all fundraising programs, including capital and endowment gifts, annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving. Responsibilities of the Director of Development include:

Strategic Leadership
  • Serve as an advocate for the school's mission, acting as a highly visible and positive ambassador to all constituencies.
  • Collaborate with the Head of School (HoS) to develop and implement long- and short-term fundraising strategies.
  • Lead the creation and execution of the school's annual development plan, including fundraising campaigns, capital campaigns, and planned giving initiatives.
  • Provide timely and transparent updates on development activities to the HoS and Board of Trustees.
  • Serve as a liaison on the board's Development and Trustee Committees.
  • Manage the advancement calendar, ensuring all development activities align with broader institutional goals.
  • Support, develop, and coach the Development Team and serve as a partner to Administrative Team colleagues.

Fundraising and Donor Relations
  • Oversee key fundraising efforts, including the Annual Fund, Spring Benefit, major giving, endowments, and special events.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with the schools 900+ donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Lead all stages of the donor lifecycle: identification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to fundraising.
  • Identify and research potential candidates for the board of trustees and manage the nomination and selection process with the Chair of the Trustees Committee.

Collaboration and Reporting
  • Work closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to align the development budget with the school's financial plan.
  • Prepare and present development progress reports to the HoS and Board of Trustees.
  • Actively engage with the school's community, maintaining close relationships with students, families, alumni, and faculty to inform development efforts.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Deep understanding of institutional advancement in independent schools and/or not-for profit organizations, with a proven track record in fundraising.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing comprehensive, multi-million-dollar fundraising programs.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to inspire and engage a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with donor databases.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills to balance multiple priorities.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • A growth mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation.
  • Integrity, professionalism, and a strong commitment to the school's mission and values.

This is a full-time, 12-month position with competitive salary and benefits. The Director of Development, who will begin the role in mid-2025, is expected to be on-site during the academic year, with flexible work arrangements available during the summer months when school is not in-session. The budgeted annual salary for this role is $225,000, depending on experience.
