NorthJersey.com is looking for a talented Visual Journalist specializing in video and still photography to produce and edit video on demand, social media video, mini-documentaries, livestreams, photo stories, galleries and article content for NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK websites and social media platforms.
The Visual Journalist may produce breaking news, trending news or other assigned video and photo content.
Their duties will include generating story ideas, writing scripts, shooting and producing videos, sourcing and integrating video from third parties, maintaining video playlists, and coordinating as needed with colleagues in the Northeast region and the wider USA TODAY NETWORK.
While the role is primarily focused on video, the right candidate will also be adept at still photography and photojournalism.
The Visual Journalist must be on top of current news events and must be able to create short video segments, sometimes based off a script and sometimes not.
The Visual Journalist will be responsible for managing their video packages from start to finish, including writing, shooting, editing and formatting for social media.
The Visual Journalist should be a proficient video editor and have experience with Adobe Premiere and the Adobe Creative Suite, but also willing to learn and use other company-provided video editing solutions including Wochit.
This position will be based in Woodland Park, N.J. but will work across multiple newsrooms in the Northeast region.
In this role, you will:
Regularly pitch visual or visual/text stories with a strong human dimension that serve our audiences and communities.
Shoot in the field on a daily basis.
Produce videos, stream live videos and post to social media platforms, as well as create polished, longer-term video projects.
Demonstrate high command of techniques and sophisticated craftsmanship in video and photo storytelling.
Use social media to share your work and connect with diverse audiences.
Video, photograph and edit daily assignments, including but not limited to breaking news, features and sports.
Create and maintain video playlists
Shoot still photo assignments and generate photo galleries as needed.
Have ongoing conversations with reporters and editors about stories, videos and photos.
Bring ideas for visual coverage to the table for discussion.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, video production, photography or equivalent.
Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography).
Proficiency using photo and video editing software, including Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, Wochit, social media video tools.
Experience shooting video and capturing high quality audio in a high pressure, dynamic and deadline-oriented environments.
Ability to write accurate, detailed and properly attributed short articles, video briefs and photo captions.
Industry knowledge.
Understanding of social media and how to engage fan bases on digital platforms.
Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.
Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
Valid driver's license, a car and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
This job includes evening and weekend work.
