About the Department

Student Counseling (SC) is a unit within Student Wellness which is a part of Campus and Student Life. SC provides mental health care to eligible students and their eligible dependents. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SC staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SC employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.



Job Summary

This one-year, full-time, benefits-eligible position is known in other university settings as a clinical psychology post-doc. This Clinical Psychology Trainee position is designed to provide a postdoctoral training position for a graduate from a fully accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology who is seeking licensure and is interested in combining clinical work with outreach, consultation, and supervision. Approximately 70% time will be spent delivering clinical mental health services, with the remaining time spent in a combination of outreach, consultation, receiving and providing supervision, and engaging in professional development and/or other SC activities.



Responsibilities



  • Conducts clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of patients, including urgent-care/crisis evaluations.


  • Provides goal-focused, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.


  • Maintains timely and complete electronic clinical documentation.


  • Provides consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.


  • Participates in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.


  • Provides clinical training and supervision for psychology externs as needed and as appropriate.


  • Exercises discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations required.


  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets federal and state laws, rules, regulations, Code of Ethics, policies and procedures as related to the field of clinical psychology.


  • Delivers clinical services with guidance and instruction from others.


  • Combines clinical work with outreach, consultation, and supervision while working towards licensure.


  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:



  • Doctoral degree in psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an APA approved graduate program.Documentation must be made available within two months post hire date.





Experience:



  • Completion of a pre-doctoral internship at a college counseling center by August 31, 2023. Documentation required within 2 months post hire date.


  • Advanced training or experience with college age or young adult populations.


  • Interest in helping students to overcome behavioral and emotional obstacles to peak academic performance.





Preferred Competencies



  • Experience training in a university counseling setting.


  • Experience providing evidence-based, time-limited psychotherapy.


  • Experience providing services to under-represented populations and first generation university students.


  • Ability to provide daytime on-call coverage.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


  • Strong interpersonal skills.
