At Brown University, academic advising deans play a critical role, overseeing the College's advising programs and opportunities that enable all undergraduates to develop and thrive as they connect their learning experiences to living lives of meaning and purpose. In this context, the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion reports to the Dean of the College and provides strategic divisional leadership on the development of goals, policies, and procedures to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the College and across the University with respect to undergraduate student learning. As such, the incumbent chairs the College's Anti-Racism and Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan (AR-DIAP) Committee. The incumbent also directs and executes programmatic strategy to support Brown's undergraduates, and collaborates with the Deputy Deans of the College to ensure that advising and curricular practices serve Brown's diverse undergraduate population. The Senior Associate Dean also collaborates closely with colleagues across campus, which may include Admission, Campus Life, Financial Aid, Institutional Equity and Diversity, Institutional Research, the Registrar's Office, Student Financial Services, and others, to ensure that College programs are structured inclusively and that policy changes are effectively integrated into divisional and University practices.
Qualifications
Advanced Degree required.
8+ years of relevant experience in academic advising and/or leading efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Proven track record of inclusive, mission-driven leadership; experience advancing initiatives in a shared decision-making environment.
Record of achievement in positions of increasing scope and responsibility. Successful experience in program administration, including planning and development, implementation, and assessment. Strong commitment to continuous improvement and accountability.
Demonstrated experience advocating for and making change towards aspirational goals for diversity, inclusion, and equity. Proven track record in furthering university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds is required.
Strong organizational skills. an ability to work without direct supervision, outstanding written and oral communication skills, discretion, sound judgment, leadership and team-building skills are essential.
Capacity to work effectively with faculty of many disciplines, with a diverse student population, and with other University stakeholders to advance the College's and Brown's missions and the goals outlined in the College and University Diversity and Inclusion Action Plans.
