Our Division

Dr. Maya Dewan leads the Division of Critical Care which is made up of 20 board-certified pediatric critical care physicians who provide clinical care in our state-of-the-art 48-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in the critical care building.

Additional team members include Advanced Practice Providers, PhD Faculty, Nursing, Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Respiratory Therapists, Patient Care Assistants, Health Unit Coordinators, Dieticians, Pharmacists, Physical & Occupational Therapists, Child Life Specialists, Social Work, Chaplin, Research Assistants, Clinical Research Coordinators, Simulation Educator and Administrative Staff.


  • We train 15 critical care fellows annually and all pediatric residents spend a minimum of two months in the PICU.

  • We provide care for over 2,750 admissions a year with an age range that includes but is not limited to neonate after discharge from the nursery through young adults (>10% of patients admitted to the PICU are >18.).

  • The breadth of the clinical care in the PICU covers the full range of life-threatening medical disorders including children and adolescents including:
    Ø Severe trauma and/or needing liver, small bowel, kidney, heart, or bone marrow transplants
    Ø Complex airway reconstruction, neurosurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, ECMO and many other services


Our Faculty

Our 21 (one PhD) faculty members participate in research that spans bench to bedside, quality improvement and informatics, simulation, and education, as well as advocacy, education, and operational leadership roles. We provide individualized career development through mentoring, career development committees, and participation in and leadership of quality improvement, education, and research efforts. We focus on team science and encourage collaboration. Our division averages more than 100 peer-reviewed publications per year with most faculty publishing a peer-reviewed paper each year. We also have a number of internal grant mechanisms and receive over $1.8M in direct grant support for research in FY24.

Required:



  • Doctor of Medicine OR Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine OR equivalent

  • Board Eligible/Certified in Pediatrics

  • Approval/credentialing from CCHMC Medical Staff Services Division

  • Completion of all required pre-employment activities

  • Assistant Professor appointment or eligibility

  • Prior clinical practice experience may be required based on the needs of the department


Experience should include demonstrated skill in physical assessment, diagnosis, and management of illness. Experience as a pediatric intensivist, conducting independent research, teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, and leading quality improvement projects are not required but are differentiating factors. Faculty rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.


Additional consideration given for those with demonstrated investment in their career development including but not limited to completion of additional relevant degrees or participation in academic discipline specific training programs.
