Job Description:

The Gordon-Browne Proton Therapy Center (GBPTC) is a cutting-edge machine utilizing an ultra compact proton therapy unit installed within an existing high-rise building. The continued success of the department requires a motivated engineer capable of working in a patient care critical environment. The Senior Linear Accelerator Engineer is responsible for operational activities, day-to-day running, maintenance, equipment calibration, modifications and improvements. All of these projects are intended to ensure optimized ongoing operations of the facility and improved operations of the equipment associated with treatment and research.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



• Participate in operation, engineering coverage, and oversight of proton therapy system to deliver 20+ patient treatments per day with uptime exceeding 95%.


• Mentor and train others engineers and monitor compliance


• Maintains good working knowledge of the machine operations and operates the equipment during assigned shifts. Attends relevant training.


• Participate in preventive maintenance, upgrades, and repairs


• Works with outside contractors, manufacturer's installers, and field service personnel to achieve installation acceptance, and repair of the radiation therapy equipment.


• Direct equipment operation by providing equipment operation demonstrations, instructing other healthcare staff in use and care of equipment and answering questions


• Improve equipment performance by studying machine-patient interaction, conferring with equipment users, developing modifications, and collaborating with manufacturers


• Helps in the ordering, maintenance, and tracking of an adequate inventory of parts, tools, and supplies


• Interacts and communicates with the Physics, Radiation Therapist, and Administrative staff on the maintenance of the machines, improvement requests, and all other projects


• May be involved in upgrades and other projects related to clinical innovation and research within the Department of Radiation Oncology



SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED



• Thorough knowledge of operation of the major accelerator therapy subsystems


• A highly skilled individual who demonstrates ingenuity in design, construction, operation or maintenance of highly technical apparatus.


• Other Skills:


o Accelerator Operations


o Facility Operations


o Machine Physics including beam optics


o Software - including UNIX and C


o Controls Experience


o Instrumentation Experience





  • FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY



  • Will be involved in the Capital and Operations budget process


WORKING CONDITIONS



Most work is performed in a control room, office, treatment room, laboratory environment, or machine shop. Night and Weekend work is often required. Will occasionally have patient contact. Will occasionally be required to work in a radiation environment which is protected and monitored according to federal and state regulations. Will be required to handle or manage the handling of some radioactive materials. Short notice schedule changes may also be required.


Must be able to climb ladders as necessary and to carry equipment up to 35 pounds



Qualifications

EDUCATION



Bachelor's Degree


Sufficient equivalent experience or applicable clinical engineering experience may be accepted in lieu of educational requirement.



EXPERIENCE



• At least 3-5 years hands-on accelerator experience with accelerators, beamlines and gantries is a plus


• A sound basic knowledge of accelerator operations


• A knowledge of building engineering systems is a plus
