Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
Cell culture under BSL2+
Assists in maintenance of lab equipment. Performs or coordinates cleaning and sterilization of laboratory glassware and instruments as needed
Performs or coordinates person-specific lab duties including making buffers, aliquoting reagents, calibrating pH meter
Prepares or coordinates the preparation of basic solutions for use within the lab
Keeps the laboratory and lab equipment clean, operational, and inspection ready each day
Prepares and maintains impeccable and up-to-date lab notebook
Helps to plan and coordinate collaborative projects & guides new lab members and rotation students
Maintains and helps to manage lab inventories
Assists in designing experiments for manuscript and grant preparation
Assists in building the lab's infrastructure and inventory
Assists in protocol development and in vivo studies using HIV-infected humanized mice applying BSL3 practices
Develops protocols for in vitro studies using HIV-infected primary cells for flow cytometry, live cell imaging, cell sorting, genomics, or proteomic procedures applying BSL3 practices
Reads the current literature to ensure performance of experiments using the most up-to-date protocols and cutting-edge technology applying BSL3 practices
Attends weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.
