Position Description

Develop and redesign instructional materials and products using technology based resources for online courses. Assist faculty in learning about becoming proficient in and applying instructional technology.

Major/Essential Functions



  • Works closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to analyze needs, identify knowledge gaps, and assist in developing instructional strategies, course materials, assessment techniques, appropriate integration of instructional technologies, and best practices.

  • Maintains a consistent, high-quality, customer-focused approach when conducting business and providing services or products to SON users.

  • Applies and suggests instructional design theories, practices, and methods to create engaging learning activities resulting in rich course content that enhances student learning.

  • Collaborates and assists/instructs faculty and staff in the use of web-based instructional materials and effectively delivers complex topics via five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Analyzes user requests to determine the parameters of the required program and if a program must be revised and modified.

  • Analyzes and documents user information needs and determines the most effective/efficient programming solution.

  • Designs user interface applications using expert-level skills via various web development tools.

  • Prepares user and technical documentation for implementing, supporting, and running new and modified systems.

  • Provides and supports the implementation of multimedia resources for teaching, learning, and
    research. Creates and maintains online tutorials and provides technology workshops. As well as assists in solving problems associated with various learning technologies.

  • Assists in staff development by training faculty, and serving as an informational resource regarding policies and procedures for online learning content.

  • Evaluates training effectiveness on an ongoing basis as well as maintain and update existing materials.

  • Analyzes and tests existing software and works with support staff, Instructional
    Designer, Faculty, and hardware systems and procedures.

  • Designs and develops application integration between systems.

  • Works in partnership with the SONIT programming team and HSCIT staff on providing resolution of problems related to program specifications or programming of utilized tools.

  • Participates in and attends meetings, and team activities related to instructional technology and curriculum design/development. Participates in regular meetings with faculty and IT Director(s) to ensure online content integration and implementation. 

  • Maintains professional knowledge of current trends and developments in the field and applies pertinent new knowledge to performance of other responsibilities.

  • Provides assistance and expertise in implementing, programming, and troubleshooting systems, addressing complaints, and solving complex problems, including user support.

  • Provides unique data and reports as requested by users.

  • Remains current with trends and literature in Shows engagement in instructional design and online education and participates in related conferences, professional organizations, and professional development opportunities.

  • Assists with coordination of projects; leads and coordinates work of others to develop, test, install, and modify programs.

  • Interacts with all levels of IT personnel in a way that promotes respect, encourages cooperation and contributes to excellent performance.

  • Performs needs assessment for instructional tools and recommendations for vendor content selection.

  • Works with SMEs, leadership, and outside consultants to develop training strategies and learning programs to support the department's goals.

  • Explores, promotes, pilots, and supports new technologies for instruction.

  • Develops resources and services, including tailored training programs, documentation, online reference materials, and learning modules ranging from basic online course management skills to the advanced application of technology in teaching.

  • Oversees the development and delivery of online programs and assists faculty in ensuring a standardized layout and design.

  • Other duties as assigned.
