Description
Primary instructors have full responsibility for teaching Stones and Bones, a Paleontology program for high school students, offered in close collaboration with the Field Museum of Natural History. Applicants must have an established connection with the Field Museum, as two weeks of classes will take place in the museum's labs and galleries and an additional two weeks will be spent at the Field Museum's ongoing expedition in Wyoming's Green River Formation. Course content will include techniques for the study of evolutionary biology, including comparative skeletal anatomy of fishes and other freshwater animals, methodological concepts such as fossil preparation, illustration, and description, as well as fundamental scientific background needed to discover and understand the significance of fossils in the field. It is a graded course designed specifically for academically advanced high school students ready to tackle UChicago undergraduate-level material and assignments, and feature both traditional (e.g., lecture, discussion) and experiential (e.g., labs, field trips) learning activities.
The Stones and Bones program will take place from June 17-July 12, 2024; while in Chicago, classes will take place at the Field Museum from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and while in Wyoming, instructional staff will be responsible for students at all times.
