SCOPE OF POSITION



OSU's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health conducts innovative research focused on understanding the individual and social factors that promote growth and resilience, while also translating scientific discoveries into practical strategies to improve the lives of individuals and communities. The Psychotherapist serves as a critical part of our clinical research program by delivering psychological treatments within the context of research studies and clinical trials designed to enhance recovery from severe mental health conditions (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Research studies are supported by a range of sponsors including the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, private foundations, and industry.





POSITION SUMMARY



Clinical and education position, including, but not limited to:



  • Provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluation for patients with mental health complaints.

  • Within the context of approved research studies, provide psychotherapy to individuals with mental & behavioral disorders to facilitate return to previous or improved functioning. Services provided include individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and/or couple/family therapy.

  • Formulate individualized treatment plans to assist patients to determine and meet treatment goals.

  • Follow research protocols developed by study investigators.

  • Other duties include advocating within local community if needed; work as part of clinical team; and complete all necessary paperwork (e.g., disability, FMLA).




DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

50%: Clinical Research Responsibilities



  • Complete comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to patients referred to the Division of Recovery and Resilience for outpatient psychotherapy research studies. This requires thorough knowledge of the DSM-5 and mental health diagnoses within the ICD-10.

  • Provide evidence-based psychotherapies to a caseload of research participants with mental and behavioral disorders, and as needed, to research participants with dual diagnosis of substance use disorders.

  • Communicate with the study investigators and team about participant progress and status. Be available for consultation/collaboration when needed.

  • Assess participant needs, and coordinate linkage with necessary services and community resources.

  • Provide family education and support services as indicated.

  • Request and provide consultation and/or support as needed from supervisor and other members of the team.





45%: Research Administrative



  • Attend regularly-scheduled project meetings.

  • Obtain informed consent from eligible research participants.

  • Complete all data entry and study documentation in the study databases in a timely, compliant, and accurate manner.

  • Complete and remain up to date on required training as necessary and appropriate (e.g., Research Ethics, Good Clinical Practice).

  • Provide participants with links to community resources to help meet their needs.





5%: Other Duties



  • Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to participants, families, visitors, and other staff. Is courteous to others and promotes mutual respect consistent with OSUWMC core values.

  • Demonstrate cultural competence with diverse populations.

  • Demonstrate cost-effective use of supplies and time; systematically organizes and prioritizes work.

  • Attend and contribute to program staff team meetings. Attend staff in-services and other meetings as required.

  • May represent the program or hospital by participating in committees, conferences, and public meetings, and by providing educational presentations to groups.

  • May mentor interns or students from graduate programs.

  • Sets example of high professional standard by conduct and dress code.

  • Ability to work independently while also being a strong team player.

  • Other duties assigned within scope of experience, expertise, and credentials.





Minimum Qualifications




For Hire:


Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling or education accepted by the State of Ohio for licensure. Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor II or III (LCDC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Social Worker (LSW) required. 0 years of relevant experience required. 0-2 years of relevant experience preferred.






Ongoing

: Training and certification in the evidence-based psychotherapy modalities specific to assigned research projects will be required (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy for suicide prevention, cognitive processing therapy for PTSD, prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD).





Patient Population Served


Knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatments necessary to meet the age-specific needs of the patient population served.



In addition, knowledge of and comfort in working with research participants and their families/support systems with diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who are experiencing severe emotional illness and are either at risk for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, or are transitioning back to the community from inpatient hospitalization
