Job Description:

The University of Iowa Healthcare, University Campus, Care Coordination Division is seeking a Social Work Supervisor to provide daily oversight of social work staff, activities, and programs within the Adult Care Coordination Division.

This position will adhere to the standards regarding attendance, documentation, continuous quality improvement, statistics, policies & procedures, and the Code of Ethics. This position will enhance the emotional and behavioral health and effective functioning of our patients and families by creating, delivering and evaluating clinical and non-clinical/consultative programs and services including counseling, assessment, discharge planning and consultative services. This position reports directly to the Social Work Manager.


Position Responsibilities

  • Organizes, supervises and coordinates the daily activities of staff, students and volunteers within the Adult Care Coordination Division.
  • Oversees daily assignments and staff coverage in absences.
  • Identifies staffing needs and works with division leadership to recruit and evaluate prospective staff.
  • Assist with recruitment of staff by reviewing applicants and participating in the interview process.
  • Design, implement and conducts orientation of new clinical staff, students, and volunteers within the Division a in collaboration with Adult Social Work Leadership Team.
  • Provides input to Adult Social Work Manager for performance appraisals within established time frames.
  • Review compliances, runs compliance reports and assists staff in completion of necessary trainings.
  • Assist Social Work Practice Leader and Social Work Manager with creation of annual competencies and assist staff with completion throughout the year.
  • Initiates and provides recognition and support.
  • Participates with interdisciplinary teams and departments to improve the provision of patient care in the adult inpatient units, ambulatory clinics and Emergency Department.
  • Acts as a point of contact for UIHC staff and patients when there are concerns, comments or questions relating to any of the categorical entitlement programs.
  • Assists Social Work Practice Leader in evaluating the quality of social work practice and developing standards.
  • Evaluates processes and practices within Social Work and makes recommendations for standards for clinical practice and quality improvement in collaboration with the Adult Social Work Leadership Team.
  • Ongoing analysis and reporting of current practice as well as gaps in services and opportunities for growth and collaboration to support the hospital mission.
  • Demonstrates knowledge compliance and understanding of CMS guidelines, HIPAA, case management and regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist Adult Social Work Manager with developing and maintaining policies and procedures, documentation standards and workflows for the Adult Social Work Team.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of patient funding sources including grant preparation, benefit assistance programs, resources, application procedures and fundraising.
  • Uses appropriate clinical skill and judgement to assess, approve and distribute patient funding
  • Coordinates data collection and reporting at the direction of the Adult Social Work Manager.
  • Create and review monthly, annual, and ad-hoc reports for team productivity
  • Assist in the implementation of new procedures, programs and methods within the Adult Care Coordination Division.
  • Represents the interests of the University and of Division leadership in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands within unit goals and budgets, strives to promote continual process and quality improvement.
  • Oversees monitoring and reporting to the Iowa Department of Human Services with regards to mandatory reporter and protections of persons programs.
  • Collaborates with other departments as needed to develop programing and secure funding
  • Actively involved in committee meetings for Adult Care Coordination Division and other related hospital committees (Protections of Persons, Disruptive Patient board, Ethics Consult, etc)
  • Represents Adult Care Coordination to Hospital Administration and take part in consultations, program reviews and strategic planning
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and development by developing mechanisms to evaluate practice.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts between 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree with a major concentration in social work.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical social work experience
  • A license to practice social work in Iowa
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.

Desired Qualifications

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in Iowa
  • Familiarity with social work undergraduate education
  • Experience with community and financial resources
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic medical center.
  • Specialized certification for social workers related to the role, such as Certification by the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), or other certifications pertinent to role.
