The Underwriter underwrites individual disability income insurance applications, within guidelines set for the issuance of policies on a standard (or better) and substandard basis.
Primary Responsibilities
Facilitate the sales process while underwriting application files by ensuring reasonable and timely underwriting decisions within established service level objectives
Determines whether to accept, modify or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision.
Has contact with the field force to gather information on which to base decisions and to communicate underwriting courses of action.
Submits for review by superiors those applications requiring higher ratings or amounts in excess of prescribed limits.
May also review and take action on reinstatements and changes in existing policies.
Consults with superiors or medical department concerning any questionable medical or personal situations.
Continue learning about the Disability insurance industry, the Company, its products, services and underwriting.
Provide professional, self-sufficient, knowledgeable and skillful risk selection
Comply with applicable rules, procedures, regulations and laws
Attend meetings and complete specific underwriting related projects as directed
Requirements
Bachelor's degree* required - preferably in Insurance, Risk Management, Accounting, Finance or similar discipline
Minimum 1year of progressive underwriting or closely related experience with consistent track of record success
Strong service oriented work ethic to understand, anticipate and satisfy customer business needs
Excellent communication (written and verbal), analytical, organizational and problem solving skills
Goal oriented, results driven, accountable and reliable
Demonstrate integrity, a positive attitude, sound judgment and attention to detail
Self-directed with the ability to multi-task in a fast past environment while under pressure to perform
Self-motivated with the ability to learn on your own to supplement training provided

Basic computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Industry education designation (FLMI, FALU, CLU etc.) or course work completion a plus
Bilingual proficiency a plus
