Kinsley Energy Systems, a full-service onsite energy solutions provider, is seeking a Commissioning Engineer. The Commissioning Engineer is a collaborative team role responsible for supporting the successful installation, commissioning, and operational readiness of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and Microgrid technologies. This role is vital in ensuring these systems achieve optimal performance, reliability, and client satisfaction from the initial run-in through sustained operation. The Commissioning Engineer is expected to carry a hybrid role applying time remotely and at the project site.

Essential Responsibilities:

Daily Operations:

  • Partner with the KES team members and vendors to review design documents, drawings, specifications and building control sequences. Identify gaps in scope and responsibility, ensuring project success. This requires a comprehensive understanding of engineering and construction concepts.
  • Partner with KES Project Manager to identify processes to increase workflow efficiencies within the energy systems team.
  • Performing construction site visits to identify and document discrepancies, including generating site visit reports summarizing each visit and tracking issue resolution through all project phases.

Equipment Commissioning:

  • Generating pre-functional checklists and performing pre-functional checks of installed equipment.
  • Partner with the KES Project Manager, technicians, and other team members to plan and execute the commissioning of energy systems at client sites across the Northeast. Facilitate seamless communication and coordination between internal teams, contractors, and clients during the commissioning phase.

CHP, BESS, and Microgrid Start-Up:

  • Oversee the installation verification and initial run-in of systems, ensuring all components meet design specifications and function effectively.
  • Conduct and detailed system tests, including load performance and efficiency checks, to validate operational readiness. Verify supporting documents are recorded accurately.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues encountered during commissioning in a collaborative manner to ensure systems are safe, compliant, and reliable.

System Reliability Testing and Optimization:

  • Lead system reliability testing to identify and address performance variances, ensuring systems meet long-term operational goals.
  • Implement adjustments and optimizations based on real-world performance data to maximize efficiency and reliability.
  • Completing functional performance testing within a technical workforce.

Technical Integration and Support:

  • Collaborate on the configuration and testing of SCADA, PLCs, and other control systems for seamless integration of CHP, BESS, and Microgrid technologies.
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations to project and service teams to implement solutions, meet key performance indicators and resolve complex issues.

Client Handover and Training:

  • Prepare and present comprehensive commissioning reports and documentation, ensuring clients have a clear understanding of system functionality and maintenance.
  • Deliver tailored technical training to clients, empowering them to operate and maintain systems effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Energy Engineering (or related field). Advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience (10+ years) in the design, implementation, and project management of CHP and Battery Storage systems.
  • Strong knowledge of energy systems, including CHP, energy storage, renewable energy integration, and grid interconnection.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEEE, ASHRAE).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage external stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and proactive approach to overcoming technical challenges.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in engineering software tools for simulation, modeling, and analysis (e.g., MATLAB, PVSyst, AutoCAD).
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional, Certified Energy Manager)
