Director, Safety & Compliance at Genesee and Wyoming Railroad in Deerfield, Massachusetts

Job Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Be familiar with all state, federal, and local safety regulations governing all aspects of the rail industry.

  • Respond to reported incidents to evaluate current best practices and recommend changes where necessary.

  • Ensure the safety of the workplace by coordinating, administering and implementing comprehensive training programs in occupational, industrial and environmental safety.

  • Assist in the administration of the company's On-The-Job Injury Policy and return to work issues.

  • Implement regional and corporate safety initiatives and policies. conduct audit assessments. and provide feedback to regional leadership.

  • Coordinate with all departments in safety training efforts and successfully manage cross functional teams.

  • Supervise and set the example for all safety training and work with the Corporate Safety Team.

  • Participate in corporate and regional safety calls with the ability to intercede in any operational activity that may be deemed an improper/unsafe job procedure.

  • Conduct safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with occupational and environmental health and safety requirements.

  • Other projects and duties as assigned.


REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:



  • Demonstrate an ability to lead and direct, plan work schedules, assign or delegate work on a daily basis, develop and mentor employees and take corrective actions when necessary.

  • Working knowledge of all major operating department practices and procedures.

  • Ability to identify problem safety areas and set up a solution to resolve.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees and elicit work output.

  • Must have a good understanding of rail industry and its goals and objective.

  • Must have substantial formal safety training and demonstrate mastery of safety topics.

  • Must demonstrate a willingness to work off hours in contacting employees working on any shift.

  • Must demonstrate willingness to travel throughout the various regions.

  • Demonstrates understanding of hazardous materials handling practices and environmental law and regulations.

  • Demonstrate computer skills, including proficiency in using common word processing software, spreadsheet software, database applications, presentations software, and email.

  • Demonstrate and understanding of developing, implementing and managing employee training programs, workplace safety programs, and maintaining complete records, policies, and procedures.


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:



  • Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years related experience in safety, training, and compliance or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required.

  • 10 years of related experience in the railroad industry is preferred.
