WHAT YOU'LL DO  


As a Rights and Permissions Manager, you will lead a centralized team of Intellectual Property (IP) Specialists in executing rights clearance processes for print, digital, and supplemental products. Your role will ensure that a consistent and scalable system is used to support the intellectual property procurement and management needs across all Ascend brands. Your leadership will be crucial in maintaining legal compliance and protecting the company's interests across product lines. 


WHERE YOU’LL WORK  


This position will work hybrid out of our Burlington, MA office.  Remote candidates will be considered. 


HOW YOU’LL SPEND YOUR TIME 



  • Strategically select and foster relationships with media, rights clearance, and stock photo vendors, including negotiating contracts and managing performance. 

  • Assess team workload to ensure efficient allocation of resources for project completion within budget and time constraints. 

  • Serve as the primary advisor on rights and permissions, offering guidance and best practices to internal stakeholders. 

  • Stay updated on intellectual property trends and adapt team policies to maintain legal compliance and industry standards. 

  • Collaborate with the Legal department for risk assessments and provide support for merger and acquisitions activities. 

  • Review and enhance rights and permissions processes, maintaining accurate documentation and optimizing asset management tools. 

  • Lead initiatives to integrate new technologies that streamline workflows, improve schedules, and realize cost savings. 

  • Mentor and develop the R&P team, ensuring adherence to processes, setting goals in line with company objectives, and providing professional growth opportunities. 


WHAT YOU'LL NEED 



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required 

  • Copyright law degree is a strong plus 

  • 7+ years of related work experience demonstrating knowledge in intellectual property clearance, photo research, and multi-media copyright 

  • 3+ years of managing direct reports 

  • Demonstrated success in vendor procurement and management relationships, inclusive of RFP process, and contract negotiation 

  • Resource management experience: capable of strategic prioritization and making decisions based upon resource availability and project scope 

  • Familiarity with digital asset management systems such as FileMaker Pro, metadata tagging, alt text creation norms 

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills and emotional intelligence 

  • Expert with both Mac and PC platforms and on most major desktop publishing applications, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Cloud 

  • Strong understanding of copyright law and how to guide the authors and constituents within it 

  • Demonstrated understanding of AI capabilities, benefits, and risks 

  • Experience with online learning management system platforms a plus
