Overview

The RN Staff Nurse is responsible for patient care within an assigned department/unit and participates as a member of the health care team in cooperation with and under the direction of the clinical manager or designee as defined by the relevant Standards and Scope of Practice for the Registered Nurse. The RN Staff Nurse assesses, analyzes, plans, implements and evaluates patient care following established patient care standards for Legacy Health System including those for patient assessment and transfer.

With around-the-clock expertise for critical health issues, including experts in trauma, heart care, burns, significant wounds, stroke, brain surgery and more, Legacy Emanuel is central to the health of our community and critical to the care of the Northwest.

Medical-Surgical Specialties (Unit 25) is located on the second floor of Emanuel Medical Center. Number of beds: Medical-Surgical Specialties (Unit 25) has fourteen private beds. All rooms have telemetry monitoring capability.



Responsibilities

Demonstrates knowledge of the statues and regulations governing nursing

and nursing functions within the legal boundaries of registered nurse practice.

Achieves and maintains clinical competency by:

  • Performing acts within the authorized scope of practice for which the
  • individual is licensed.
  • Conforming to the essential standards of acceptable and prevailing
  • nursing practice.
  • Assuming duties and responsibilities within the practice of nursing for
  • development/age-appropriate client care, supervisory roles, managerial roles, or consulting roles, with documented preparation
  • for those duties and responsibilities, provided competency had been
  • established and maintained.
  • Performing new nursing techniques or procedures after presenting
  • written documented education and/or a clinical experience.
  • Performing Emergency Department assessment protocols.

Demonstrates advanced critical care nursing process assessments skills to include: cardiac, respiratory, and neurological

Collecting objective and subjective data from observations,

examinations, interviews, and written records in an accurate and

timely manner as appropriate to the client’s health care needs in

accordance with LHS documentation standards using LHS communication tools. The data includes, but is not limited to:

  • Physical and emotional status
  • Growth and development
  • Cultural, religious and socio-economic background
  • Client and family health history
  • Information gathered from family or significant others, and other health
  • care team members
  • Client knowledge and perception about health status and potential
  • for maintenance of health status and health care goals
  • Ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Patterns of coping and interacting
  • Environmental factors, (e.g. physical, social, emotional and ecological)
  • Available and accessible human and material resources.

Develops and modifies the plan of care based on assessment and

coordination with other health care team members. This includes:

  • Identifying priorities in the plan of care
  • Setting realistic and measurable goals to implement the plan of
  • care.
  • Identifying nursing intervention(s) based on the nursing assessment
  • Prescribing nursing orders
  • Identifying measures to: maintain comfort, support human functions
  • and responses, maintain an environment conducive to well being and
  • to provide health teaching and health counseling.

Implementing the plan of care by:

Initiating nursing interventions through:

  • Assisting with care
  • Following nursing orders
  • Assigning, delegating and supervising care
  • Teaching clients, their family members or significant others
  • Referring to appropriate resources.

Providing an environment conducive to safety and health

Communicating and documenting nursing interventions and

responses to care, to other members of the health care team in

accordance with LHS standards and tools for documentation

Promoting continuity of care across the health care setting

Providing client advocacy by defending the client’s right to receive

care based on the plan of care, which includes receiving complete

and accurate information and insuring that patient rights are protected.

Evaluates the responses of individuals or groups to nursing interventions, (evaluations should involve the client, their family or significant others, and health team members). This includes:

  • Documentation and communication of evaluation data to the
  • appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Evaluation data as a basis for reassessing the client’s status,
  • Revising the plan of care, prescribing changes in nursing interventions and issuing nursing orders.


Qualifications

Education:

As required by licensure. BSN or degree in progress strongly preferred. BSN may be required for specific assignments; experienced RNs without a BSN may be hired based on clinical experience with approval of the site CNO.

Experience:

Three years of adult nursing experience required; 1 year Critical Care experience required. Emergency Department and IV infusion experience strongly preferred. Pediatric nursing experience preferred; Labor and delivery experience preferred.

Skills:

Working with physicians and utilize expert assessment skills to make appropriate interventions based on assessment.

Prioritize multiple patient care needs appropriately.

Function effectively on multiple units including specialty units.

Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Current conscious sedation competency.

Basic familiarity with computers preferred.
