Position: Intern - Small Business and Environmental Lending Assistant

Immediate Supervisor: Area Director/Director of Lending

Mission Focus: Small Business Lending in East Texas/Environmental Lending

Location: Communities Unlimited’s East TX office

Summary of Position

The Small Business and Environmental Lending Assistant provides a wide range of support services and undertakes various tasks and activities. The primary focus will be to provide support to the loan officer. This support will include various clerical, administrative, analytical, and outreach duties. The loan assistant must be outgoing, possess excellent customer service skills, great phone etiquette, and have above average computer skills. The loan assistant should be dependable, detailed oriented, and possess good judgement. This position will also provide the loan assistant with the opportunity to learn about financial analysis as well as monitoring and managing credit requests.

Education/Certification Requirements

Must be a junior/senior at Stephen F. Austin State University. Preference is given for a student working on a degree in finance, banking, and other business-related degrees.

Experience/Skills Requirements

Relevant job experience and work in communities a plus.

A successful Small Business and Environmental Lending Assistant will be able to:

  • Effectively communicate in both written and verbal formats.
  • Deliver results in an environment with high degree of self-directed time management and project management.
  • Understand basic financial statements, organizational budgeting.
  • Deliver high degree of accuracy with attention to detail in work products.
  • Assist with public presentations that provide information about Communities Unlimited’s programs to small and large groups.
  • Facilitate processing of small business and environmental loans including processing applications; obtaining required documents; preparing and maintaining files.
  • Formulate and communicate new ideas and suggestions, including developing reports and/or new systems that will enhance the operations and effectiveness of any small business or environmental program.

Summary of Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for performing a variety of clerical and administrative tasks which include but not limited to customer phone calls, emails, document collection and sorting, and interacting with any customers that come to the office.
  • Work with loan applicants at all stages of the loan application process to ensure the application process moves forward in a timely manner.
  • Assist the loan officer in analyzing loan documents and credit reports.
  • The employee shall always demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state and local officials involved with the regulation of small business and environmental loan programs.
  • Establish and maintain regular communications and work relationships, with appropriate agencies, institutions, individuals, or offices within the state in order to: (a) maintain, improve and/or expand services & scope of the Communities Small Business and Environmental Loan Programs.
  • Maintain working knowledge of and comply with corporate polices, procedure, supervisor direction and contractual compliance requirements.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and security with all information, understanding obligations in regard to client data, borrower data, IT data, computer passwords, email account passwords, phone lock codes, etc.
  • Accurate and timely submission of time and expenses in compliance with CU policy and supervisor direction, understanding this record in a critical part of CU’s compliance with grants and contracts.
  • Comply with corporate branding and communication requirements and support corporate communication processes by submitting client stories, securing releases for use of client quotes/images; media capture (photos, videos, etc.) and collaborating with communications staff to promote events, loan closings, community projects and milestones, and client businesses.
  • Represent CU and facilitate other meetings and events as needed.
  • Special projects, and other duties as may be assigned by supervisor or program director.

The position requires occasional travel throughout CU’s East Texas region meeting and working with small business owners as well as community officials. This travel may average 10 hours or more per week, driving to communities.

Tools Used in Job

Proficient use of a computer, internet, smart phone (texting, email, photos, videos, social media, and calls), web-based databases for data-entry, Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. Use of additional software for project related activities may be required and training will be provided.
