Moran Towing Corporation ( www.morantug.com ) has an exciting opportunity available as a Director of Operations, Transportation in our New Canaan, CT office. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Vice President, Transportation.
Position Summary
The Director of Operations, Transportation is responsible for the day-to-day management of tugs and barges for the Transportation division. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise for towing and transportation operations and assists in ensuring vessels operate in a safe, efficient, economical manner and in full compliance with Company, Regulatory, Port State, and Class Society requirements.
Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:
Provide leadership and direction to the team managing operations for the Transportation fleet of tugs and barges.
Moran's Transportation Division provides bulk and tank barge transportation services along the U.S. Atlantic coast, U.S. Gulf Coast, and the Caribbean basin. The offshore fleet is comprised of nine (9) articulated tug and barge (ATB) (bulk & tank) units, five (5) dry cargo bulk barges, and one (1) conventional tank barge.
Supervise vessel operations, which include:
Maintain Moran's Safety Management System (SMS) policies and procedures in conformity with applicable rules and regulations promulgated by the USCG, ABS, IMO, and other Federal/State/Local and Port State statutes.
Ensure vessels are properly manned with qualified, certificated, medically fit, and appropriately experienced mariners.
Confer with tug captains on navigational standards.
Monitor vessel operation and performance to maximize fleet utilization.
Assist in developing budgets, forecasts, and dry dock plans.
Ensure ISM, SIRE, TMSA, and customer vettings are conducted and findings addressed promptly.
Manage relationships with Regulatory and Professional Bodies, Port Authorities, Customer Representatives, and Industry Groups.
Assist with duties of the Designated Person Ashore (DPA), Divisional Company Security Officer (CSO), and Alternate Qualified Individual (AQI).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Marine Transportation or Well-rounded sea service will be considered with education.
Knowledge of applicable USCG, IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL and American Bureau of Shipping rules and regulations.
Proven experience in shoreside management dealing with personnel, training, and QHSSE at a Director or Senior Operations Manager level.
Valid TWIC card or ability to obtain.
Experience with vessel inspections and audits.
Trained in accident investigations and root cause analysis.
Valid Driver's License and safe driving These must be maintained during employment and the incumbent must adhere to the requirements of Moran Towing Corporation's Driver Safety Policy.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office program.
Strong supervisory, leadership, organizational, and time management skills.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, phone, written, and audience presentation communication skills.
Ability to proactively identify challenges and bring issues to resolution.
Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with tug & barge operations, risk management, and International Safety Management (ISM) or equivalent safety management system.
Proven ocean-going service.
Valid U.S. Coast Guard license.
Physical demands of this position include being able to:
Work safely and navigate in a marine setting.
Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
Occasional crouching or stooping.
Occasional lifting and/or carrying up to 20 lbs.
Adept use of a computer, including good finger dexterity.
Hear and speak, including the ability to present to an audience.
Close and color vision, allowing reading of printed material, graphics, and computer displays.
Withstanding of exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity.
Working Conditions
Work is performed mainly in a traditional office setting, but travel is required to visit vessels throughout the East and Gulf Coasts.
Ability and willingness to work in your assigned office location a minimum of 3 days per week and work remotely the remainder of the week.

Our target pay range for the Director of Operations, Transportation position is $195,000 -$225,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate's exact location, experience, and expertise related to the qualifications.
