Position Title: Peer Mentor - TRiO SSS Scholars (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours per week)

Position Summary:
The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Scholars program is seeking Peer Mentors to work in the TRiO Academic Success Center (ASC) at the Desert Vista (DV) Campus. Peer Mentors will be required to attend and participate in training before starting their work assignments.
As a Peer Mentor, you will assist college students with organization, accessing campus resources, and providing course guidance as needed. Additionally, you will help students navigate the college's social network and develop self-advocacy skills. Peer Mentors may also be asked to support other TRiO SSS activities, such as New Participant Orientation, College Success Workshops, general office duties, and other TRiO initiatives throughout the academic year.
TRiO SSS Scholar Peer Mentors play a vital role in welcoming and introducing new first-generation students to the college. You will be responsible for greeting students in person or by phone at the TRiO ASC and/or on college-wide campuses. Peer Mentors will also check in with students throughout the semester and may be required to travel to multiple campuses as needed.
The work schedule for this position may include working evenings and weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Peer Mentors will assist with the following, which may include but not limited to:
Greeting students professionally in person or by phone at the TRiO ASC or other TRiO programming events
Helping students navigate college processes, such as using MyPima, completing college paperwork, and connecting with their assigned advisor, counselor, or student life coordinator
Contacting students to register, confirm, or reschedule participation in events like New Student Orientation (NSO), Group Advising Sessions, Connect U sessions, etc.
Providing check-in and registration support at each programming event
Leading small group discussions and icebreakers for new students at programming events
Offering tours of PCC campuses
Assisting students with their first steps in preparing for college, including answering questions about resources and the student experience at Pima
Helping students set up and navigate various digital resources like MyPima, D2L, etc.
Following up with students after Student Affairs programming events to answer any questions
Sharing information about opportunities to build connections on campus, such as student clubs, organizations, leadership opportunities, and ways to get involved in student life
Leadership and Civic Engagement
Assist in planning and implementing TRiO programming events
Support the development and facilitation of leadership training opportunities for students, particularly for peer mentors during co-curricular programming events
Contribute to the assessment and evaluation of programming events
General Office Duties
Answer phone calls and respond to inquiries
Schedule appointments for students
Enter data into the Blumen database
Manage and respond to emails
Greet students in a professional manner
Distribute information to students
Call and text students to remind them about upcoming advising appointments or program events
Maintain and update the TRiO SSS inventory
Job Requirements:
High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
Maintain satisfactory academic progress, with a preferred GPA of 2.5 or higher and a completion rate of 70% or above
AND be registered for at least 6 credits at PCC/UA for the upcoming semester
Availability to work flexible shifts and at multiple campus locations as needed
Preferred:
Current or former TRiO SSS participant or alumni
Experience in mentoring
Current student at Pima Community College and/or the University of Arizona
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
At least one semester of experience in student leadership, service learning projects, college work experience, or working with high school or college students; OR customer service experience
Strong dependability and reliability
Ability to lead small groups effectively
Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and prioritize tasks while managing multiple responsibilities
Ability to adhere to College standards and practices
Capacity to develop positive and cooperative relationships with others
Strong time management skills, with the ability to work independently
Tuition Waiver and Student Employees:
Student employees must be actively enrolled students throughout the duration of their term of student employment. In order to be eligible for this position, you are required to be an actively enrolled student at Pima Community College during the time of employment. This position is considered a student employment opportunity and thus is not eligible for the tuition waiver provided by the college.
