The Burn Crew Member (BCM) will serve on a crew of 5 people. The burn crew travels throughout the Missouri Coteau and Missouri River Breaks of central North Dakota and is responsible for preparation and implementation of prescribed fire at various nature preserves in the landscape. In addition, the BCM will assist with preserve management tasks such as boundary posting, firebreak preparation, fencing, tree clearing, brush cutting, and equipment maintenance when conditions are not conducive to burning.
The BCM participates in wild land fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. The BCM will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. As part of the BCM's ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wild land fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee). May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

There are 5 openings for this position. This is a short-term, temporary position that will start April 14 and end May 23, 2025.
The crew will be based out of the Cross Ranch Preserve office, located 8 miles south of Washburn, ND. This position is based on a 40-hour work week, but may require irregular hours, long days, and travel on short notice.
Housing is provided at the Cross Ranch Preserve Crew House, in possibly mixed gender facilities, for the full term of employment at no cost. Transportation from TNC office to the various preserves will be provided by TNC.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program.

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $16.00 to $18.50 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
