JOB SUMMARY:The Department of Counseling at Texas Southern University seeks a dynamic and dedicated Assistant Professor with expertise in qualitative research methodologies. The ideal candidate will be a licensed faculty member who is passionate about advancing the field of counseling through innovative teaching and impactful research. This role involves teaching graduate-level courses, advising students in their research endeavors, and contributing to the ongoing development of the program's curriculum. This position is a nine-month appointment.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong track record of scholarly publications and presentations, showcasing their ability to conduct high-quality qualitative research. The Assistant Professor will collaborate with faculty and engage in community outreach initiatives, enhancing the program's reputation and connection to the broader community.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and application of qualitative methodologies in counseling, and a strong commitment to excellence in scholarly research and teaching. Responsibilities for this position will include conducting rigorous academic research, teaching graduate­ level courses, and contributing to a dynamic faculty team in expanding the program in Counselor Education at TSU.


Essential Duties Summary:



  • Teaches courses in the discipline area and provides quality instruction with teaching techniques that increase effectiveness.

  • Supervise and mentor graduate students in their research projects

  • Contribute to curriculum development and program evaluation.

  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.

  • Engage in community outreach and professional development.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range:

$62,274.50 - $80.956.00


Education:

An earned a doctoral degree in counselor education/counselor education and supervision.


Required Licensing/Certification:



  • Licensed Professional Counselor

  • Certified School Counselor

  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor

  • Valid Driver's License Preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Knowledge of:


  • Standard for principles, methods and procedures in an area and determines long-term direction under his/her guidance. May involve a level of expertise that is recognized both internally and nationally as top notch in the field.

  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.





Skill in:

  • Problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Subject matter expert in a professional discipline or function; understood to be the "go-to" expert on complex methods and procedures.

  • Strong time management.

  • Both verbal and written communication.




Ability to:

  • Prepare detailed reports.

  • Lead the development or modification of work procedures in the discipline or function for virtually any situation.

  • Work independently.


Work Experience:



  • Demonstrated expertise in qualitative research methods and their application in counseling.

  • A strong record of scholarly publications and presentations in qualitative research.

  • Experience in teaching at the graduate level is preferred.





Preferred Experience:

  • Two or more years of postdoctoral research experience.

  • A record of impactful research publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Experience teaching in an active learning environment with innovative teaching strategies.

  • Experience writing competitive funding proposals.

  • Experience developing and maintaining a funded research program.

  • Experience mentoring and advising graduate students.

  • Experience fostering a sense of belonging for all students, including traditionally underrepresented populations in Counselor Education Experience in recruitment and retention of graduate students.

  • Drive to excel in teaching, research, and service.


Working/Environmental Conditions:
