Division Chief
False Claims Division
Health Care & Fair Competition Bureau
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for an experienced and highly motivated attorney to join her management team as the Chief of the False Claims Division. The False Claims Division investigates business conduct and brings enforcement actions against companies in diverse industries, including healthcare, technology, transportation, communications, and public construction. Cases often require coordination with state, local, and federal authorities and involve matters of public interest and social justice, as well as challenging and complex enforcement initiatives.
Primary Duties: The Division Chief, along with a Deputy Chief, is responsible for supervising and directing the Division's Assistant Attorneys General and other staff. The primary responsibilities of the Division Chief include the day-to-day supervision of all aspects of civil enforcement, including the review and approval of all civil investigative demands, civil complaints, briefs, and other court filings, as well as the development of investigative strategy and negotiation of civil settlements. The Division Chief is also responsible for the overall administration of the Division, including personnel matters, drafting periodic reports on the Division's work, and attending regular meetings with the Attorney General and other senior staff. As time permits, the Division Chief personally handles significant or sensitive matters, including aspects of litigation or trial, settlement negotiations, and non-litigation projects. The Division Chief also works with the Deputy Division Chief in mentoring Division staff and assisting them with skills development.
False Claims Division attorneys represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in investigations of alleged violations of the Massachusetts False Claims Act. In addition to supervision of aspects of civil enforcement discussed above, the Division Chief will assist division attorneys in assessing, investigating, and litigating sealed whistleblower actions, some of which are filed on behalf of multiple government entities, and all of which require collaboration with the whistleblower and their attorney. The Division Chief may be involved in policy development, including drafting or reviewing proposed legislation.
