Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust (WHLR) was formed with the primary objective of acquiring, financing, developing, leasing, owning and managing income producing assets such as strip centers, neighborhood centers, grocery-anchored centers, community centers and free-standing retail properties. WHLR's portfolio consists of strategically selected properties that are located in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Southeast regions of the United States, and are generally leased by nationally and regionally recognized retailers of consumer goods. Our specialties include, but not limited to Acquisitions, Leasing, and Property Management.

We currently are looking to add a Real Estate Counsel to our dynamic team! Essential Job Duties:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial leases, amendments, subleases, and ancillary leasing documents for the Company's shopping center portfolio.
  • Advise on tenant default issues, including handling multi-state eviction proceedings and other remedies.
  • Assist with lease disputes, mediations, and litigation as necessary.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate service contracts with vendors selected by business team to support real estate operations.
  • Partner with leasing, property management, and finance teams to align legal strategies with business objectives.
  • Provide guidance on legal and regulatory issues impacting the company's real estate operations and ensure compliance with applicable laws across multiple states.
  • Support acquisitions and dispositions of real estate assets and related financing arrangements, including reviewing purchase, sale and financing agreements, performing due diligence, and assisting with closings.
  • Advise business partners on new laws, existing laws and legal rights that would impact real estate operations of the Company.
  • Maintain knowledge and records of the company's legal documents and proceedings.
  • Facilitate filings of licensing forms and other statutory requirements.
  • Communicate with and manage outside counsel, including cost control of billable hours.

Experience, Requirements, and Core Competencies:
  • Experience with commercial real estate leases.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to commercial real estate operations.
  • Proficient understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
  • 6+ years of legal experience, with a focus on commercial real estate leasing.
  • Strong knowledge of landlord-tenant law, particularly in retail settings.
  • Familiarity with multi-state eviction procedures.
  • Experience in real estate acquisitions and dispositions preferred.
