Description: Job Summary

The Design and Fabrication Specialist supports students, researchers and faculty within the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) by providing expert guidance on design and fabrication techniques. Reporting to the Director for Design and Fabrication Instruction, the Specialist is a key member of a collaborative, service-oriented team that advises on practical applications of engineering principles to enhance hands-on learning.

This role offers an opportunity to impact engineering education directly, helping shape the next generation of engineers and researchers through practical, hands-on experience in a well-organized, welcoming, and safe environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about providing top-notch service to students, researchers, and faculty, and is dedicated to supporting the educational and research mission of the School.

Position Description

  • Work closely with students and researchers to understand and support their project ideas and objectives. Assess and provide feedback on project proposals, experimental designs and research plans to ensure they are feasible and well structured. Collaborate with faculty, students, and researchers to support project development, assisting in translating ideas and concepts into attainable prototypes. Make recommendations for design modifications and improvements to enhance the functionality and manufacturability.
  • Offer expert guidance on design and fabrication methods, including materials selection, manufacturing processes, prototyping techniques, and equipment usage.
  • Provide training and mentorship to students and researchers in design principles, CAD software, manual and CNC machining, welding, laser cutting, and other relevant fabrication processes. Advise on technical issues, problem solving strategies and organizational techniques for various projects.
  • Provide daily supervision of shop users, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, proper equipment usage, and efficient use of shop resources.
  • Provide hands-on training on equipment and safety practices and protocols. Develop training content, including manuals, guides, instructional videos, and other training materials, to guide users in best practices for safe and effective operation of specific equipment and tools. Develop engaging and informative content for machining workshops on fundamental and advanced techniques.
  • Assess project requirements to determine if fabrication can be handled in-house or outsourced, making decisions based on available resources, timelines, and technical requirements. Provide accurate quotes and handle billing processes. Offer expert guidance on design and fabrication methods, including materials selection, manufacturing processes, prototyping techniques, and equipment usage. Perform light fabrication and machining in-house as time and resources permit.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends in design and fabrication, introducing new techniques and best practices to enhance the knowledge and experience of students and researchers.
  • Document processes, techniques, and procedures and provide regular reports on facility usage, inventory, and project milestones.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase materials, tools, and equipment as needed. Provide recommendations for shop expansions and future purchases. Organize tools and supplies to ensure a safe, clean, and efficient workspace. Conduct routine maintenance/repairs on equipment and contact vendors for major repairs.


Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field and 2+ years of related experience, or 6+ years of practical experience as an all-around machinist with broad fabrication skills.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive experience in design and fabrication techniques, including hands-on knowledge of manual machining, as well as CAD/CAM software and CNC equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials science, and prototyping processes.
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts through instructional workshops and student training. Experience in developing and delivering machine-specific training.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse community of students, researchers, faculty, staff and vendors.
  • Commitment to safety and experience with safety protocols.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, problem-solving, project management, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Adaptability to changing needs and the willingness to work outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.


Working Conditions

The shop environment includes heavy machinery and tools and can be noisy at times. Must adhere to safety protocols; protective equipment is required and provided.
