As a member of the HMS CIO leadership team, the HMS Chief Technology Officer (CTO) serves as a visionary leader and as a key collaborator with HMS faculty and department leaders, and with peer IT leaders to deliver quality, reliable, viable solutions, and services at scale. The incumbent directs IT initiatives that enable education, research, administration, and digital transformation missions of the school. The CTO works collaboratively with counterparts at HMS, as well as Harvard University IT, HMS affiliated hospitals, research institutes, and other Harvard Graduate Schools on shared technology solutions. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the CTO is responsible for defining and developing HMS' technology and full lifecycle infrastructure strategy in alignment with institutional strategic goals. The role oversees an annual budget of ~$25M and guides the growth and development of over 50 IT professionals, to support their career advancement and keep pace with the adoption of new technology.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define and evolve the IT Infrastructure architecture, strategy, and roadmap, and inform the IT strategic plan; make key decisions on technical infrastructure investments and make the business case to secure funding and buy-in of executive and IT leaders.
  • Serve as the visionary leader and central coordination point for foundational infrastructure and research technology within HMS, designing quality, reliable, performant solutions at scale, to support and transform the institution and enable IT initiatives for faculty and students' success.
  • Guide engineering, development, and operations function for infrastructure modernization, including hybrid multi -cloud, edge computing, containerization, virtualization, and automated, programmable infrastructure, and guide the growth and development of the IT workforce and team structure to meet emerging technology challenges.
  • Ensure that all internal and external systems are properly running and performing as they should by actively monitoring and responding to incidents that might affect highly available and leading-edge systems as well as normal operations, coordinating with IT Incident response and communications functions, and following best practices.
  • Assess the potential benefits and risks of bringing emerging technologies into the organization; determine how to evolve the architecture and develop the IT workforce to support the introduction of new technologies. Coordinate with the HMS CISO to ensure security controls mitigate risks and meet university requirements.
  • Ensure that operational excellence is maintained, in partnership with peer HMS IT and HUIT leadership, through the adherence to and creation of policies, processes, and procedures, and following ITSM and technical standards and best practices for decisions and procurement of technology.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in implementing and leading IT infrastructure technology investments and teams.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven track record of successful adoption and deployment of new IT technologies and development of sound operational processes in a medium to large IT organization.
  • Demonstrated IT leadership skills; staff and financial/budget management as well as change management experience.
  • Knowledge of working in academic or academic medical center setting, or the healthcare industry
  • Experience with research laboratory automation in collaboration with scientific faculty
  • Skilled in strategy development, complex project management, and identifying and executing solutions.
  • A broad understanding of IT technology and vendors combined with the ability to evangelize new developments to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Solid business acumen; ability to synthesize and analyze information for actionable decision-making.
  • Effective personnel mentorship and leadership skills and experience with developing strong technical leaders and proficient and diverse staff.
  • Advanced degree in science, engineering, or business
  • Experience running an IT department of 25 or more technical staff with an annual budget
