SHORT DESCRIPTION SUMMARIZING POSITION



Full-time, 100%, 12-month, renewable appointment. Primary responsibilities include teaching and coaching the intercollegiate livestock and meat animal evaluation judging teams and contributing to livestock production and management teaching and outreach activities. Initial appointments are typically at the rank of Instructor, Lecturer, Teaching Assistant Professor or Clinical Assistant Professor. Senior level appointment to Sr. Instructor/Lecturer or Teaching/Clinical Associate Professor or Teaching/Clinical Professor may be available for candidates with significant additional experience and stature.



SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



This position will coach the intercollegiate livestock judging team and co-coach the intercollegiate meat animal evaluation team. They will also teach the courses associated with those teams along with other livestock and production animal science courses and laboratories as assigned. This position will be expected to cultivate livestock judging alumni relationships to advance the Livestock Judging program of the University of Illinois. Coordination of various youth activities related to livestock judging, meat animal evaluation, and skillathon, such as contests, workshops, and camps is also expected. This position will integrate into the Food Animal Production and Management programs and be expected to support the missions of teaching, research and extension of the Department of Animal Sciences. The incumbent will design and implement an outreach program aimed at youth interested in production livestock in the State of Illinois including training programs and demonstrations. They will work with state commodity groups (i.e. Illinois Beef Association and Illinois Pork Producers Association) and industry affiliates to develop programs targeted at recruiting and developing the future workforce in the livestock industry. In accordance with departmental needs and candidate areas of expertise, the candidate hired into the position may be asked to assume additional related responsibilities to enhance the mission of the department.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



Education : Graduate degree in Animal Science or related field. Individuals working toward a graduate degree may be considered, but the degree must be obtained by the starting date.


Individuals with a MS or DVM degree may be appointed as Instructor. PhD is required for Lecturer, Clinical or Teaching Professor position.


Experience : Required: Livestock judging experience. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and leadership potential commensurate with position sought. Knowledge of livestock production and management. The ability to work efficiently in a team environment. Excellent organizational skills. Good oral and written communication skills.


Preferred: Coaching experience in livestock judging. Experience planning youth or producer outreach activities.



PROPOSED STARTING DATE : August 16, 2025, or as negotiated.

Within the College of ACES, the Department of Animal Sciences ( http://ansc.illinois.edu ) manages livestock farming operations and research facilities for swine, beef, dairy, and poultry species, all conveniently located within 5 minutes of campus.

Given the physical nature of the role of livestock judging and outreach teaching faculty, when working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may frequently weigh up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS



This is a full-time (100%, 12/12 service basis) specialized faculty appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for this position is $65,000 to $80,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
