Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Coppin State University, a fully accredited institution and member of the University System of Maryland, is accepting applications for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost). Founded in 1900, Coppin is a model urban, residential liberal arts university located in the northwest section of the City of Baltimore. Coppin today maintains its proud tradition as a historically black college or university (HBCU) and as a fully inclusive and welcoming university. The major academic programs of the institution include Education, Health Care, and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, which are designed to prepare students to be competitive in the state, region, nation, and world markets.

Coppin offers 32 Bachelors and 14 Masters degree programs, 15 certificate programs and one Doctoral degree program, with approximately 2,200 students enrolled in day, evening, online, and weekend undergraduate and graduate courses. Coppin is primarily a commuter university with roughly 680 student residents. Approximately 74 percent of the student population is female, and 90 percent are Maryland residents. Just over 58 percent are first-generation college students. Coppin participates in NCAA Division I sports as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and has eleven different Greek organizations on campus.

Summary of Opportunity:

This position provides the invaluable opportunity of being a key team member in shaping the academic vision of the University. This position has broadly delegated responsibility for leadership and articulation of the academic mission and goals of the University. The Provost will drive the academic and research agenda for the University in collaboration with the deans and faculty.

Coppin desires an experienced and successful academic leader and an action-oriented visionary with an innovative approach and strong management, interpersonal, and communication skills. The Provost will be a member of the Presidents Cabinet and will report directly to President Anthony L. Jenkins.

For consideration, candidates must have an earned academic doctoral degree from an accredited institution; PhD required, a record of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship or creative activity, and service; a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in leadership beyond the level of academic dean; and a record of national and state level engagement (i.e., boards, commissions, etc.).
