Your Role: Trainee - Pet Health Vet Sales Representative

Embark on an exciting career in animal health with Elanco! As a Trainee Pet Health Vet Sales (PHVS) Representative on the US Pet Health team, you’ll receive comprehensive training and mentorship while gaining hands-on experience engaging with Elanco veterinary customers and prospects. You will be part of a supportive team and contribute to the success of Elanco's innovative pet health products within a defined geographic territory for each milestone stage. This 1-year fixed duration entry-level role provides a fantastic opportunity to develop your sales & technical skills to be proficient in the competencies needed for a full-time sales territory.

Your Responsibilities:

Onboarding:


  • Product Training: Learn the scientific molecules, mode of action, and product labels of the Elanco products and how to effectively position them with customers.  This extensive training is a blend of virtual and in person at Elanco headquarters in monthly sessions for the first ~4 months while working with the Elanco team in your home location in most cases.


  • Company Training: You'll embark on a comprehensive training program designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in your role. This includes in-depth training on Elanco's processes and systems, including sales tools, reporting platforms, and internal communication channels. You'll also receive thorough instruction on our company's code of conduct, policies, and ethical guidelines, ensuring you're aligned with our values and operating procedures. We believe in ongoing learning and development, so you'll have access to continuous training opportunities and resources to enhance your skills and stay abreast of industry advancements throughout your career at Elanco.


  • Field Experience (Mentored): Begin by shadowing experienced sales representatives during customer visits, observing their interactions, sales techniques, territory management tactics and relationship-building strategies. This initial shadowing phase will provide a foundational understanding of field level dynamics and customer engagement.

Experience & Elevate:



  • Collaboration with local Sales Team (Mentored): Work alongside experienced sales representatives from the team in your home location, to learn how to grow and foster customer relationships and support distributor representatives for the ultimate Elanco customer experience, territory management, and value beyond product delivery. As you progress, you'll gradually take on more responsibility, leading specific aspects of customer interactions under the guidance of your mentor both individually and in partnership.  Ultimately, you'll gain the confidence and skills to manage your own customer visits and build strong relationships with veterinary influencers.


  • Product Placement (Guided): Learn how to effectively position Elanco products within targeted veterinary accounts and gain practical experience under supervision.


  • Sales Objectives (Supported): Contribute to achieving territory sales objectives and learn how to execute sales strategies with strategic accounts, receiving ongoing guidance and feedback.


  • Territory Business Planning (Collaborative): Participate in developing a territory business plan and identify key opportunities. Receive training on executing the plan and tracking progress.


  • Launch Meeting Support (Team-Based): Assist in setting up and executing launch meetings in conjunction with veterinary services, gaining practical experience in promoting new products.

Assignments:



  • Purpose & Value: The culmination of your training involves real-world sales experience within a designated territory to apply learned skills and knowledge, demonstrating readiness for a full-time sales territory role. Assignments last a minimum of 30 days, potentially extending to 3 months or more.  provides invaluable hands-on experience for launching your Elanco sales career. 


  • Assignment Types: Cover territories for maternity/medical leaves, open positions during hiring, or other temporary needs.


  • Relocation: Temporary relocation may be required, often accompanied by a Short-Term Assignment relocation package.


  • Focus: Primarily sales-focused, with potential opportunities in retail, operations or marketing based on interest and business need.


  • Multiple Assignments: Possibility of completing multiple Short Term Assignment(s) before potentially transitioning to a full-time role.

What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):


  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or High School Diploma/GED with demonstrated interest in animal health or sales. Relevant coursework or extracurricular activities a plus.


  • Experience: Prior experience in customer service or a related field is a plus. Internship experience in a sales or animal-related field is highly desirable.


  • Skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic. Eagerness to learn and a passion for animal health are essential.


  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record

Additional Information:


  • Travel: Up to 50% (with appropriate training and supervision).


  • Field Base: Must be open to relocation within the US

  •  This is a Fixed Duration Employee (FDE) position with a one-year term. This offers a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience and contribute to Elanco's success. Elanco currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from $50,000.00 to $80,000.00 depending partly on the successful candidate’s qualifications, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending partly on company and individual performance). Additionally, Elanco offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees that includes a company-matching 401(k); vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death ­benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).
