Position Overview

The PhD in Sustainability Education program at Prescott College is seeking one full-time Core Faculty member to join our team. The limited-residency delivery model blends a core curriculum that combines online, in-person, and community-based learning. The Ph.D. program in Sustainability Education provides an opportunity for advanced, interdisciplinary, applied, and student-centered learning that addresses important global and local issues. It is based on the traditions, values, and educational and ecological as well as social justice philosophies that have differentiated Prescott College from other educational institutions since the 1960s. This Ph.D. Program emphasizes rigorous scholarship, critical thinking, and experiential, action-oriented, and community-based research. Based on a cohort-model of learning and scholarship, the program fosters open discourse and design of an ecologically sustainable, regenerative, and socially just and diverse world in the 21st century. Through respect for diverse perspectives and scholarly collaboration, integrated, applied and interdisciplinary thinking, the Ph.D. program promotes the evolution of ecological understanding, psychological/philosophical consciousness, and equitable learning for a regenerative future. Faculty govern the curricula, teach courses, advise student-driven dissertations, and engage in scholarship and professional development within the field. This is primarily a remote position, with a requirement that faculty travel and participate in PhD symposium (residency), up to twice a year.

Key Responsibilities

Student Dissertation Advising and Mentorship

Notable experience serving as a dissertation advisor with a proven record of successful doctoral graduates. This work involves significant 1:1 student support, coaching, and guidance on critical research methods and methodologies, and on the summative outcome, an APA-formatted published dissertation.

Experience advising and mentoring graduate students beyond the dissertation, which includes program completion advising, scholarly mentorship, and general support for student wholeness and retention.

Teaching and Curriculum Development in Sustainability Education or Related Field

Fluency with culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy.

Demonstrated knowledge on sustainability education, environmental justice, and transformational leadership theories, concepts, and practices.

Demonstrated experience with engaging online teaching and learning.

A commitment to offering formative, substantive individualized student feedback.

Research Experience and Acumen

Knowledge and skills in a range of research methodologies and methods. It is important this candidate can teach and advise with both critical quantitative and qualitative research methods.

An active research agenda demonstrated through ongoing scholarly dissemination such as (but not limited to) peer reviewed publications, book contributions, podcast appearances, grant generation and participation, and regular conference presentations. This is particularly critical for modeling to the doctoral students what they are producing.

Demonstration of a strong scholarly identity through membership and/or leadership in organizations whose primary mission is to advocate for and to provide development, support, and/or recognition for social and environmental justice.

Additional Key Attributes

An intersectional, feminist, regenerative, and decolonial orientation to sustainability, and a commitment to advancing systemically marginalized voices in the field.

Proficient technology skills related to online learning management platforms, video conferencing, student assessment, community building, etc.

Strong interpersonal communication skills, and a commitment to responsive communication with students and colleagues.

A willingness to collaborate with colleagues and students.


Required Education

Earned PhD degree in a field that aligns with Social and Environmental Justice Values as Enacted in Teaching and Learning.
