The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing innovative solutions for U.S. government problem statements and advancing OSG's project initiatives, particularly through grant and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) applications.

Specific Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design -

  • Develop concept design alternatives to address U.S. government problem statements, as communicated through SBIR briefs and other grant opportunities.
  • Design and support prototype development for sUAS, robotics, autonomous systems, HMI, and HMIF, ensuring mission-ready solutions for field deployment.
  • Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including detailed mechanical part and assembly drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Procure or fabricate mechanical parts and assemblies as needed to support project activities.
  • Use 3D CAD software (such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, Siemens NX) to create and refine mechanical and autonomous systems designs.
  • Conduct fundamental sizing and performance analysis using first-order hand calculations.
  • Perform structural analysis and optimization using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools like ANSYS, COMSOL, or Simcenter.
  • Design components for various 3D printing processes, including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design engineering, autonomous systems, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in prototype development, particularly with sUAS, robotics, and autonomous systems, and successful fielding of mission-ready solutions.
  • Proven ability to create, evaluate, and select effective concept designs for both mechanical and autonomous systems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, or Siemens NX.
  • Experience with fundamental sizing, performance analysis, and FEA tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, Simcenter) for structural analysis and optimization.
  • Familiarity with design processes for 3D printing technologies, including FDM, SLA, and SLS.
