Research Communications Specialist



The Department of Urology is seeking a Communications Specialist to support the Chair of the department located at Shadyside Medical Center. The candidate will manage communications across multiple platforms, including professional correspondence, social media, educational materials, and progress reports. This role is pivotal in developing communication products that further the research and educational goals of the Urology department. Responsibilities include crafting presentations, generating departmental reports, and assisting with research, educational, and development initiatives. Additionally, this position supports the Vice Chairs of Academic Affairs, Research, Quality and Safety, and Clinical Operations. The candidate will also undertake special projects assigned by the Chair of Urology.


Job Summary

Assists, in conjunction with multi-disciplinary teams, with writing large, multi-investigator grant proposals and other manuscripts, as well as editing scientific reports, assisting with website copy, providing writing/editing support for book chapters, editing reports by internal and external stakeholders, and developing ad hoc requested materials. Implements critical scientific research editing to documents and maintains compliance with all guidelines and regulations.


Essential Functions
  1. Oversee and enhance the department’s digital presence, including social media and website management. This involves training content experts within divisions, updating department pages, and developing new content. Ensure cohesive content management across Pitt and UPMC care sites, promote departmental achievements, and support grant applications and reporting for the Chair. Serve as a media liaison and manage administrative tasks as the department manager.
  2. Compile and disseminate the weekly internal Urology Update, gathering information from department leaders and media alerts.
  3. Produce a monthly newsletter targeting current and prospective donors to update them on departmental activities and initiatives.
  4. Develop and update patient education materials that are culturally sensitive and appropriate.
  5. Support the Chair with educational, research, and operational projects, including creating presentations and coordinating reports on departmental activities such as the Annual Review of the Chair of Urology. Contribute to other communication efforts, including those related to US News & World Report rankings.
  6. Perform additional duties as assigned, including special projects for the Chair of Urology
