Job Description:

The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Research Support Office is seeking a Research Support Manager to provide expertise, experience, and support in developing training grant data tables as well as larger institutional program, center, and institutional grants (e.g. multi-component and interdisciplinary grant applications) either independently or in partnership with CCOM department(s); maintains, enhances, and verifies data in the CCOM training grant data tables WebApp; serves as back-up research support for CCOM departments in times of position transitions and/or extended absences.

Percent Time: 100%

Duties to include:


Pre-Award Grant Exploration, Development and Submission

  • Collaborate with CCOM leadership on research priorities for centers/institutes, and work with designated faculty/investigators.
  • Search for funding opportunities that are for complex, multi-disciplinary research, center and/or training grants. Share with Director of RASO to assess alignment with the research strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with PI(s)/Investigators in review of research funding announcements and requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Scientific Editing and Research Communication Core (SERCC) Grant Writer position in preparation of proposal applications.
  • Assemble proposal team, assign individual responsibilities, identify resources, and develop schedules to ensure timely completion of proposal application.
  • Attend internal and external informational meetings about funding opportunities.
  • Establish regular meetings with appropriate staff/investigators of the proposal to ensure accuracy and completeness of documentation as well as ensuring applications will be completed timely for submission.
  • Liaise between all parties and maintain all documentation for proposal application.
  • Assist in the creation and formatting of some proposal documents, such as biosketches, other support documents, facilities, and resource documents, in collaboration with proposal team and other relevant offices.
  • Create internal budget and budget justification.
  • Review proposal documents for accuracy, formatting, and adherence to the guidance.
  • Create and manage the electronic, or other format, application for submission.
  • Serve as Health Care resource for UI processes.
  • Create and submit UI proposal routing form before five business days of the due date to sponsor.

Training Grant Responsibilities and Support

  • Assist, or lead, in the completion of NIH T32 Data Tables Web Application (T32 WebApp).
  • Provide leadership and support of the T32 WebApp for future enhancements, in collaboration with T32 WebApp advisory team, CCOM Information Technology office, and Director of RASO.
  • Maintain and update T32 WebApp regularly for accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Provide training for T32 WebApp users.
  • Provide support and guidance for faculty and administrators on the T32 WebApp.
  • Create training grant (i.e. NIH T32) data tables and provide necessary demographic/other information to the PI(s), and/or their administrators, for the training grant proposal application(s).

Operational/Administrative Support

  • Provide feedback and direction to faculty and research staff based on grant regulations or budgets to ensure compliance and desirable outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison with departmental administrators and principal investigators from CCOM department, non-CCOM colleges and departments, and Division of Sponsored Programs.
  • Collaborate with RASO Director and team to provide necessary training and support based on new and/or changing guidelines.
  • Lead/collaborate with teams on CCOM strategic initiatives to increase NIH funding, with specific attention to training grants, center/institute grants, and program project grants (PPG).
  • May serve as temporary back up to CCOM department research administrators during times of extended leave, vacations and/or vacating their positions.

Compliance

  • Ensure proposals meet university and sponsor guidelines and requirements.
  • Collaborate with departments to assure departments are adhering to contract/grant terms and conditions as awarded by funding agency policies, university polices, and state and federal regulations.
  • Regularly monitor T32 WebApp for updates to data in collaboration with departments and other data-resource offices.

External Communications and Negotiations

  • Communicate with University of Iowa units to assure compliance, adherence to policies and status tracking, and direct communications with sponsors and other entities.
  • May represent the college at meetings with other university offices/units that are involved in research development across the UI campus.

Leadership/Supervision

  • Active contributor to Research Administration Support Office discussions, process improvements, and group projects.
  • Participate in professional research administration/development organizations and communities.
  • May serve as member on internal and/or external committees related to training grants and research administration.
  • May provide administrative supervision of other Research Administration Support staff. May hire, develop, coach/counsel and manage performance of staff.
  • Liaise with and provide guidance to department-based research support staff.
  • May supervise students.


Education Required


A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


Required Qualifications:


Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation capabilities.

Very detailed oriented with ability to complete work that requires high attention to detail and accuracy.

Proficient in Microsoft computer programs, particularly Excel.

Demonstrated ability to provide high quality customer service in a deadline driven environment.

Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting.


Desired Qualifications:


Highly desired to be proficient in electronic systems, such as Cayuse, Grants.gov, and eRACommons.


Experience preparing, submitting, and/or managing federal grants and contracts, with emphasis in large research, center, institute and/or training grant proposals.


Member of NCURA, NORDP, and/or SRAInternational.


Working knowledge of Microsoft Teams.


Working knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations.


Experience working with the University of Iowa Research Tracker and university financial reports.
