The Research Scientist within the School of Earth Sciences under the College of Arts and Sciences will be working as a member of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography Science Team (SWOT) science team and developing new proposals using novel estimates of river discharge from SWOT to study global hydrology. In the role for the SWOT science team, the Research Scientist will lead the effort to validate SWOT discharge estimates and communicate the accuracy of this critical dataset to the community. This will extend into networking with other researchers and international stream gage agencies to improve the assets that Confluence has access to. One outcome goal for this work will be both improving and accessing the state of SWOT global discharge accuracy, not just in locations where we have gages, but worldwide. Additionally, the research scientist will be a key interface between the Confluence team, the Discharge Algorithm Working Group (DAWG), and The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Algorithm Development Team (ADT) members. This will extend not only to weekly and by weekly calls, but also to national and international travel developer meetings and conferences. The research scientist will also mentor students in Durand's group, participate in dissemination of the research through publications and scientific conferences, and lead future grant proposals as PI.
