Research Communications Manager



Located within the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research (OSVCR), the Research Communications Manager will serve as a critical member of a team tasked with raising the visibility of the research enterprise and to promote research accomplishments. The Research Communications Manager is expected to collaborate in the conceptualization of communications and marketing efforts and to ensure the coordinated, timely, and effective flow of research information across multiple communications channels and platforms with minimal supervision. Intended audiences are within the research enterprise, across the university, and external.

Responsibilities may include:

Marketing and Written Communications

  • Assist with internal and external newsletters, which may include gathering and organizing information; writing and/or editing content according to University style guidelines and the highest standards of writing; fact checking content; obtaining high-quality artwork to accompany stories; building out newsletter in email marketing system; managing distribution lists; and managing and reporting newsletter analytics.
  • Assist with social media efforts, which may include developing a social media calendar, scheduling posts, writing original posts and working with stakeholders on guest posts, active monitoring and interaction with related sites to grow visibility and audience size, and managing and reporting on analytics.
  • Assist in the development of a media relations plan, gathering newsworthy stories, media lists, writing draft press releases and pitches, and communicating with faculty about their research
  • Assist in the planning and execution of internal and external events hosted by Pitt Research
  • Assist team with planning, production, and distribution of Pitt Research Annual Report, including identifying, writing and editing content
  • Develop strong working knowledge of University writing style guidelines
  • Develop strong working relationships with communications professionals across the University

Web/Digital/Design

  • Manage OSVCR website presence for content, graphic elements, functionality, accessibility, consistency and quality control in collaboration with University IT and web communications teams. Develop compelling, audience-appropriate content, and adjust as needed based on analytics and department needs. Provide assistance with other Pitt Research websites as needed, including reviewing pages for accessibility and providing suggestions based on department goals and standards.
  • Manage internal Pitt Research Hub Sharepoint site, including conceptualization of new stories, content creation, and distribution of announcements for Pitt Research staff. Work closely with administration team to provide up to date information and highlight achievements of staff and events, collaborating with photographers to obtain high-quality images.
  • Manage branding and digital assets for the department, including obtaining and organizing photography, videos, logos, PowerPoint slide decks, and more.
  • Manage small-scale design projects such as digital signage, infographics, flyers and brochures used for marketing and communications purposes. Provide design assistance as needed and according to skill level.

Bachelor’s degree in Technical/Scientific Communication or Writing, Journalism, or related field preferred. Alternate degree fields (e.g., Public Health) will be considered/accepted depending on the nature/depth of the experience as it relates to this position.

Job Summary

Executes University communications and marketing strategies for a program or unit. Oversees print and electronic communications, subsequent media promotion, and development of a content marketing plan. Tracks and evaluates marketing strategies. Guides staff. Ensures consistent messaging and maintains University brand and style.


Essential Functions

Strong written and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills are required. Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task are essential to this role.


Physical Effort

Position is mostly sedentary but may require travel to on campus meetings and events.
