THE CHALLENGE

This role is a position within Commercial & Risk Management team where the team's primary goals are (1) portfolio management of market-driven commodity exposure; (2) origination of energy sales from operational and development assets; and (3) analyzing contractual risks in assets evaluated for acquisition. The Director will support the team's goals through origination of new transactions, optimization of the portfolio, and supporting future growth.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

o Development and origination of contracting opportunities for renewable fleet, thermal fleet, and organic development opportunities.

o Lead market assessment and customer identification to guide development team on offtake likelihood and timing.

o Develop important relationships and network of contacts that are key for revenue contracting opportunities.

o Guide the analysis of alternative structures and submission of relevant Requests for Proposals and bilateral negotiations.

o Manage negotiations of Power Purchase Agreements, Gas Tolling Agreements and other forms of contracted revenue.

o Track major developments across target markets and with specific buyers.

o Support management of existing portfolio, including risk management activities.

o Lead initiatives to optimize revenue of existing assets.

o Support VP of Commercial & Risk Management in ad-hoc assignments relating to energy trading opportunities, portfolio risk management, M&A activities, and market research.

THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or Finance preferred. Experience may substitute for degree.
  • Experience leading successful contract negotiations for thermal, renewable generation and battery storage with a preference for CAISO and WECC experience.
  • 5+ years' experience participating in successful commercial negotiations for over 300 MW of executed transactions (swaps, PPAs, or CFDs) with load serving entities, cooperatives, utilities, energy traders and corporate off takers
  • Experience structuring and negotiating natural gas heat rate call options and tolling agreements
  • Experience with assets and consent requests for assets with project-level debt and tax equity investors
  • Experience with battery energy storage system transactions
  • Experience with the complex contractual terms and conditions involved in a variety of physical and financial contractual structures for a variety of products (power, Renewable Energy Credits, capacity / Resource Adequacy, and Ancillary Services)
  • Experience with standard industry contract forms (ISDA/EEI)
  • Strong understanding of the trajectory of western markets, including strategic views of offtake procurement
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Must have strong interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of company personnel and external customers.
  • Self-starter, ability to work well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

The Onward Energy team is collaborative, dedicated, hard-working, and down to earth. The management team is comprised of seasoned industry professionals supported by experienced project operators and advisors.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

Onward Energy is currently implementing a hybrid office environment, with team members in the office at least two days per week. The position functions in a smoke and vaping free professional office environment. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as laptop computers, phones, and scanner/photocopier.
