Job Description:

OVERVIEW:


The StarPoint Summer Camp Teacher is an educator with the StarPoint Summer Camp program (for youth in grades 1-6) for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The teacher modifies, coordinates, and instructs pre-developed curriculum and activities in tandem with the program theme. The incumbent participates in off-site field trips with the StarPoint campers and mentors interns and junior teachers while they are in the classroom, consistently displaying a professional demeanor. StarPoint Summer Camp Teachers are assigned to one of three “cabins”: Trains (grades 1-2), Polar Bears (grades 3-4), or Race Cars (grades 5-6).

REPORT TO:   Family Programs Manager


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:



  1. Teaches pre-developed lessons based on the theme of the week. Adapts lessons as needed to meet cabin needs in collaboration with the Family Programs Instructors.

  2. Views campers as competent learners who are active, social, and capable. Differentiates instruction for each student based on individual developmental needs and interests. Fosters an inclusive learning experience for StarPoint campers and their families

  3. Builds experiences, using the galleries and interactives within the museum as an extension of the classroom. Builds an extraordinary learning experience for each StarPoint camper.

  4. Implements daily program activities for cabin groups. Adapts activities based on the needs of the StarPoint campers.

  5. Understands and uses positive behavior guidance to help each child develop the ability to self-regulate their behavior following the camp guidelines. Understands and implements project-based learning with in-depth investigations of topics.

  6. Attends staff meetings, professional development trainings and events as scheduled. Participates in open and on-going communication with camp staff and volunteer colleagues.

  7. Helps to monitor environment for hazards or sanitary concerns to ensure a safe and healthy learning experience. Assists in correcting problems by following proper procedures, and/or removing StarPoint youth from hazard until it can be resolved.

  8. Follows museum health and safety guidelines and maintains proper cleaning protocols.

  9. Clearly communicates daily program objectives and goals. Serves as a positive mentor and role model for StarPoint staff and campers by demonstrating instructional best practices and encouraging the development of leadership competencies.

  10. Works with Family Programs colleagues to ensure appropriate staff-to-child ratios are met within the cabins or other areas of the museum and on field trips.

  11. Ensures lesson goals are achieved, and camper assessments are submitted to the Family Programs Instructors.


REQUIREMENTS:



  1. Indiana Educator License or equivalent experience in related field.

  2. Three (3) years’ experience working with children in an educational setting.

  3. Demonstrates respect, appreciation, and care for students throughout the educational environment.

  4. Provides excellent customer service and a developmentally effective approach to connect with StarPoint campers and their families, as well as visitors, staff, and volunteers.

  5. Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of settings and various weather conditions.

  6. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.

  7. Able to work independently and in team efforts.

  8. Must be available for full day training sessions on June 9, 10, 11.

  9. Must be available full time for all of the camp weeks –June 16-July 11, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

  10. Must be available for StarPoint Open House (June 10, 5-8 p.m.) and the end of camp celebration (July 11, 5-8:30 p.m.).

  11. Must be available for Kids Science Camp (July 14-17, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (5 p.m. on July 17))

  12. Meet with Family Programs Instructors after each camp day for a mandatory debrief and overview of the next day.


*Special consideration given to those applicants who are multi-lingual.


ADA REQUIREMENTS:



  1. Must be able to observe children, monitor appropriate behavior, facilitate activities, create schedules and lead instructional programs.

  2. Must be able to communicate extensively with children and staff. Must be able to hear children’s voices, and assist youth in emergency situations.

  3. Must be able to create and prepare program materials for distribution to groups of youth.

  4. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

  5. Must be able to move at a child’s pace, and stand, kneel or sit for extended periods of time and have stamina to endure extreme temperatures and humidity in an outdoor environment.
