Job Description:

OVERVIEW:


The StarPoint Summer Camp Junior Teacher is an individual between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age who works with the Family Programs and StarPoint staff to facilitate the StarPoint Summer Camp Program (for youth in grades 1-6) for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.  The Junior Teacher assists with class programs and activities while assuming a mentoring role for the StarPoint Summer Camp participants. The incumbents are assigned to one of three “cabins”: Trains (grades 1-2), Polar Bears (grades 3-4), or Race Cars ((grades 5-6)

REPORTS TO:  Family Programs Manager


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:



  1. Takes an active role in organizing and dispersing supplies for the StarPoint Summer Camp.

  2. Understands and uses positive behavioral guidance and strategies when interacting with StarPoint campers. Takes directions and follows the lead of the StarPoint Teacher to maintain consistency in the classroom.

  3. Collaborates as a team member with departmental colleagues to ensure optimal operation of the classroom and StarPoint activities. Helps to maintain optimal conditions of the classroom by preparing lesson materials in advance and ensuring materials have been put away by the end of the day.

  4. Uses effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication to foster understanding with children, families, and colleagues. Provides excellent customer service to StarPoint campers and their families, as well as to all visitors, volunteers, and staff in the museum.

  5. Helps to monitor environment for hazards or sanitary concerns to ensure a safe and healthy learning experience. Assists in correcting problems immediately by following proper procedures, and/or removing StarPoint camper(s) from hazard until it can be resolved.

  6. Follows the museum’s health and safety guidelines and maintains proper cleaning protocols.

  7. Helps to maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios in the cabin or other areas of the museum and on field trips.

  8. Adheres to instructions/guidelines set by classroom teachers.

  9. Assists in other duties assigned by classroom teacher and Family Programs staff.


REQUIREMENTS:



  1. One (1) year of proven experience working with children in an educational setting.

  2. Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of settings and various weather conditions.

  3. Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.

  4. Must be available for full day training sessions on June 9, 10, 11.

  5. Must be available full time for all the camp weeks –June 16-July 11, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

  6. Must be available for StarPoint Open House (June 10, 5-8 p.m.) and the end of camp celebration (July 11, 5-8:30 p.m.).

  7. Meets with Family Programs Instructors after each camp day for a mandatory debrief and overview of the next day.

  8. Must be between the ages of 15-18 years old and have valid work permit.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:        



  1. Must be able to observe children, monitor appropriate behavior, facilitate activities, create schedules and lead instructional programs.

  2. Must be able to communicate extensively with children and staff.

  3. Must be able to hear children’s voices, and assist youth in emergency situations.

  4. Must be able to create and prepare program materials for distribution to groups of youth.

  5. Must be able to lift 25 lbs (can be accommodated as needed).

  6. Must move at a child’s pace, and stand, kneel or sit for extended periods of time and have stamina to endure extreme temperatures and humidity in an outdoor environment
