CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Analyzes and performs examinations on evidence to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other controlled substances using chemical techniques.
Performs housekeeping tasks including maintaining laboratory supplies and reference materials.
Assists in the inventory, maintenance, storage, and disposition of evidence.
Performs basic maintenance on gas and liquid chromatography instrumentation.
Supports efforts to summarize toxicological literature.
Enters data into databases and prepares reports on observed and recorded effects.
Uses state-of-the-art chemical and biomedical instrumentation.
Serves as liaison to the courts and other external agencies by providing fact witness testimony.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
This is the journey-level class where toxicologist works with greater independence and may participate in training laboratory technicians. The toxicologist has primary responsibility for operating the toxicology laboratory and for performing tests in routine, complicated, unusual, or debated cases by utilizing GC and LC-
MS-MS, HS-GC, SPE, and LLE techniques. The toxicologist position also requires experience in forensic toxicology laboratory practices such as chain of custody, an FDLE and clinical license is desirable but not mandatory, and instrumentation troubleshooting capabilities. The casework, all results, and reports are reviewed by the toxicologist and supervisor/director.
Thorough knowledge of physical and analytical chemistry as it applies to the field of forensic science.
Analyzes and performs examinations on evidence to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other controlled substances using instrumental, chemical, techniques, including (but not limited to), gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, instruments, and methods used in drug and toxicology analysis as applied to the collection and analysis of criminal evidence.
Thorough knowledge of laboratory techniques, analysis, and procedures, including various types of spectrometry, chromatography, and spectrometry.
Ability to explain laboratory analysis, instrumental techniques, procedures, and theories in a clear and concise manner so that non-scientists may understand the significance of the results obtained using these procedures
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare and deliver legal testimony accurately and be cross-examined and remain composed in court.
Ability to apply scientific procedures, methodology, and formulas to assigned work.
Provides independent routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural science, a forensic science, an engineering science, or criminalistics, including or supplemented by at least twelve (12) credit hours in chemistry at the graduate or undergraduate level, and 1-5 years of full-time experience in a toxicology laboratory conducting toxicology analysis.
Certification and Licensing:
Must be eligible to apply for FDLE license.
