Metallographer I

We are looking for a Metallographer I for our Westbury NY facility. In this role you will support Materials R&D, Application Development (CSC), Equipment Production, as well as multiple plants (Westbury, Troy, Plymouth) for Materials Production. Metallurgical/metallographic analysis is required for product quality release, FAI inspections, customer complaints, product research, and customer-oriented application development. A person in this role conducts a wide array of testing to ensure that materials meet specifications for product release. Coatings, powders, and equipment components are tested for mechanical, structural, and other performative properties.

Your Responsibilities:


  • Metallographer I performs metallographic / metallurgical evaluation of thermal spray coatings, powders, and equipment components for production quality and R&D purposes. They must operate independently under general supervision by the Lab Supervisor.
  • Must work in Metallurgical laboratory environment and be fully capable of all standard aspects of metallographic analysis including but not limited to: Metallographic preparation, Rockwell hardness testing, Vickers hardness testing, surface profilometry/roughness testing, coating adhesion strength testing, Optical microscopy, SEM and EDS microscopy, phase analysis, etching, and more.
  • Thermal Spray operation may also be assigned where necessary.
  • Must maintain all safety, productivity, and quality requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring the proper and safe use of equipment within the laboratory at all times.
  • Must be able to identify and take corrective steps to prevent an unsafe working environment within the laboratory.
  • Manage workflow through the laboratory.
  • Must communicate well with colleagues to plan for best workflow and ensure that time commitments are met.
  • Perform routine maintenance on test equipment and laboratory environment
  • Responsible for maintaining 5S in metallography laboratory
  • Perform standard testing in accordance with established internal procedures that meet ASTM standards and NADCAP requirements.
  • Conduct analysis of thermal spray coatings, powders, and equipment components on behalf of production QA and R&D departments
  • Document thorough testing reports for internal stakeholders. Ensure compliance with all quality assurance standards and documentation procedures.
  • Interpret testing data and provide feedback to engineers and other stakeholders where applicable.

Your Profile:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED required.
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in related discipline preferred.
  • Knowledge of thermal spray process is a preferred.
  • Prior laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to follow a variety of work instructions.
  • Understanding of standard laboratory safety procedures in the handling of dangerous chemicals and materials.
  • Capable of using standard laboratory equipment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office computer software (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access).
  • Must be able to operate advanced software from variety of different instruments for testing and/or databasing.
  • Must have good organizational skills and be able to multi-task.
  • Must have good communication skills.

For individuals assigned, hired to work or working remotely in/out of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada, Washington State, or New York City, Oerlikon is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the current compensation range for this position, which is $54,180 - $69,660 per year. Some positions within Oerlikon may also offer eligibility to participate in a discretionary incentive program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for the role will be based on a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, internal equity, job location, work experience, education, training, certifications, licenses, etc. Therefore, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each individual, it is likely that not all applicants will be hired at the highest end of the listed compensation range. Our total compensation package goes beyond base compensation and it will include a competitive benefits package starting with 2 weeks paid time off accrued on a monthly basis, 12 holidays, 48 hours personal/sick time (exception for NY where we follow State law,) medical, dental, vision, 401K, holidays, pet insurance and tuition reimbursement all effective day one of hire.
