Job Description:

The Nebraska State Historical Society and the Neligh Mill are seeking a friendly and enthusiastic seasonal tour guide. The guide will share information with visitors and give tours, answer questions about the mill and its historical significance.


Widespread settlement across Nebraska led to this increased need for flour mills that would grind grain into flour. Among the many mills that sprang up across the state was Neligh Mill, one of the state's major mills and which operated for over seventy-five years.


The Neligh Mill was started in 1873 by the town's founder, John D. Neligh and completed by W. C. Gallaway in 1874. The Mill received both commercial orders and government contracts. Neligh flour was shipped to the Indian reservations in South Dakota and to military posts, including Fort Robinson. During these years, the Mill also exported sizable quantities of flour to England.



Job duties



• Giving tours of the Neligh Mill to visiting groups and answering tourist inquires and provide area historical information.


• Greet all visitors and provide information on the Neligh Mill, exhibits and events.


• Assist with light housekeeping in the office and mill. Assist with grounds maintenance including mowing and light maintenance projects.


• Answer the phone politely, and professionally.


• Prepares public display materials including brochures and visitor's guides.


• Knowledge of, or desire, to learn Nebraska's history and culture.


• Ability to interact with the public professionally, work well with people of all ages and abilities.


• Excellent customer service skills, outgoing and friendly personality.


• Ability to use a lawn mower.


• Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.



Requirements / Qualifications




Minimum Qualifications: Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture



Preferred Qualifications: High School graduate and experience with customer service OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning or areas related to Nebraska history, geography or culture. Preferred dates of employment are May 1st to Sept 30. Flexible for school schedules for beginning or ending dates if necessary. The Neligh Mill hours are Tuesdays - Saturdays 10am - 5pm.



Other: Regular and reliable attendance is required.
