Job Description:

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking to hire a Newborn Screening Program Manager to play a key role in our Iowa Newborn Screening programs. This position will perform administrative, fiscal, and program management responsibilities requiring a high degree of discretion, leadership, and independent judgment, under the direction of the Division Director and the Department of Pediatrics Assistant Director. This position will assist in implementation of policies and procedures, communications with internal and external newborn screening stakeholders, and preparation of fiscal and statistical reports required for budgeting, preparation of funding proposals, and program planning as required.


Position Responsibilities:

Program supervision

  • Develop strategic plan for Newborn Screening programs and related programs in coordination with stakeholders.
  • Prepare and write annual program and fiscal reports for all relevant Newborn Screening programs and related programs.
  • Grant management.
Program-specific tasks
  • Daily oversight and administrative support of Newborn Screening caseload.
  • Direct supervision of NBS follow up staff.
  • Internal and external liaison.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive quality improvement and quality assurance processes for Newborn Screening and related programs.
  • Perform and/or supervise duties related to the addition of a new disorder to the Iowa NBS panel.
Education and outreach
  • Assist in development and implementation of program public relations and awareness activities
  • Act as a representative of the program at local, regional, and national level
  • Attend relevant meetings, present, publish in relevant journals
  • Facilitate, promote, and participate in NBS related research projects

About the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics


The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians. Our clinics include: General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions. Education Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a natural or health science field or discipline; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience Requirements:

  • Demonstrated 3+ years of experience in program management is required.
  • Demonstrated 3+ years of experience in public health is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills is required.
Highly Desired Qualifications:
  • Prior Newborn Screening Program experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with public health policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with forming and managing effective working teams.
  • Some (1 to 3 years) experience with educational outreach activities.
