Essential Function:


Support the specialized activities in the areas of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

Qualifications:

• Preferred: Associate Degree in Science (AS) or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) with concentration in chemistry, biology or biotechnology.


• Minimum: At least 12 college credits in chemistry, biology and microbiology (equivalent to to 3-4 courses, not at an introductory level).


• Proficient in the use of computer software Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


• Proficient in the use of analytical scales.


• Proficient in the use of aseptic technique.


• Experience culturing mammalian cells.


• Excellent communication and time management skills.


• Excellent teamwork skills.


• Experience in the preparation of microbiological culture media, pH standards and mammalian cell culture media.


• Experience preparing chemical solutions, such as buffers, pH standards.


• Experience with the use of autoclaves and sterilizers.


• Experience with common laboratory equipment, including non-analytical scales, pH meters, water baths, chemical fume hoods, biological culture cabinets, and microscopes.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare culture media for the microbiology and biotechnology laboratories following established standard operating procedures.


• Prepare growth media for the Cell & Tissue Culture laboratory following standard operating procedures.


• Dispose of biological waste following proper sterilization procedures involving the use of an autoclave.


• Keep an up-to date inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.


• Procure quotes to the department's office assistant for purchasing of materials and supplies.


• Keep logs of equipment service appointments.

Rate of pay of $17.00 per hour; maximum 28 hours per week.
